Those were pretty good, yeah. Sounded like a band who could still make an incredible record if they really wanted to.
Probably even more than one. I guess it all comes down to what one thinks of as an incredible record. I believe they need a quality record at this point of their career because their music seems to be the thing they aren't the most famous for. It's sort of evident from the interview they did with Colbert.
lol pearl jam is properly mixed for one night on tv and great record hope is renewed

Not a fan of the song selection, but the energy is still there. Agree, the guitars sounded awesome. These guys can still do some good things. Also, do I need a talk show to jam with PJ???

Check out the video version of MYM on the rarities comp. it sounds pretty similar, which continues to point to the BoB conspiracy

Well their guitars dont sound that great on the boots either, or when I see them live. I just wonder if they use a different setup for smaller performances compared to larger arena tours.

I think that all arena concerts sound like shit. Modern inclination is to crank up the bass and kick, which just creates a ton of noise when played in an enormous, reflective stadium. Smaller venues, and outdoor venues with great sound systems, are usually way better.

Edit: I don't think it has anything to do with "setup," per se. The problem in arenas is that their amps are pumped through massive PA systems. They are likely using the exact same amps on Colbert, it's just that there's not so much volume bouncing off of hard, reflective surfaces.
Yea but the boots should be recorded as part direct from the board, stage mics and venue mics no? Feel like they would sound better if that were the case. Maybe stone treated himself to a new fuzz or something.

I like the little chuckle Ed does right before the very last scream at the end. Vintage Ed sound there.

Stone was definitely up to something. Whether it was some new gear, or just playing the song with a different energy, he did sound different. Whether it's a mixing decision, or just microphone/arena bleed, those boots always sound like they were recorded in an arena. I think that at a certain point, you just can't escape the size of that sound.
I guess my question would be, why have the guitars sounded so weak/thin on past talk show/SNL performances? This was so much different.

I think it's the way live acts are mixed for tv. They always scale back the instruments and way overemphasize the vocals. SNL is notorious for this. That's the first musical performance I've seen on the new Late Show, but whoever was on that soundboard did an excellent job. If that continues, he'll be the best show for musical guests.

It helps the show is taped in an actual theatre. I remember the Letterman aftershow performance in 2006 having pretty good sound too.

Guys, it's pretty simple - this performance and the video version are the ONLY times they've ever played the song in the same key as the album version. It's the down-tuning at shows to allow Ed to cope that makes it sound so much more muddy and less satisfying in concert.
