So is Trump lining up and grooming his devil spawn offspring for office?
Are we gonna see more Trump presidents after this?
If we aren't all dead via nuclear war by then that is

Well I don't think they will be presidents. Think of them more as heirs to the throne.

Are you saying you would have volunteered for Vietnam?
I don't fault anyone for finding ways to have stayed out of that clusterfuck called Vietnam.
How dd Trump get away with calling McCain whatever retarded thing he did?

Personally, I don't hold deferments against anyone. On special privilege deferments. My dad got into the reserves before his number came up. If he hadn't, he would've fought. Those were his choices. Wait and hope you're in before you have to fight.dimejinky99 wrote:Vietnam .. Trump got four deferments, three for college, and one for medical reasons

That's fair. But using a privellege to escape the draft has been brought up in many previous elections has it not?

The problem is, you keep viewing this stuff as "liberals making a political point". When people make "statements" like this, they are merely expressing outrage over the fact that a modern day Hitler has been elected president (and vice president). People would have done the same to Obama because he is a "black muslim", which doesn't exactly carry the same weight. It's not a simple political argument anymore. It's a war on morality.Birds in Hell wrote: If someone were to gently admonish Obama (for the sake of argument) in a similar way to make a political point, I really think people would go fucking bananas.

I don't think I would go as aggressive as 2017, but as I said earlier Trump does now have a real incentive to tow the GOP party line, because now dumping him results in Pence, as you said, and not a clusterfuck situation during the election.meatwad wrote:My prediction is that the president-elect won't last through 2017 before impeachment proceedings begin. He has no sense of the office, its boundaries or the myriad conflicts of interest he's already presented before he's even been sworn in. And for Republicans, why not impeach him? They get Pence, who's their wet dream come to life.

Impeachment is wishful thinking. No way the Republicans piss off his supporters, who are more numerous than theirs apparently.

Also, I have a hunch that while most people would step into the Oval Office and feel a sense of responsibility, Trump is probably just seeing dollar signs. It's the perfect vantage point from which to make all manner of deals of self-interest.BurtReynolds wrote:Impeachment is wishful thinking. How wasn't this a thing?
The backlash against Bill Clinton was on more patriotic grounds and largely a rehash of the great Vietnam debate. The GI Generation was still very much a force in society, and after the hell that they went through during WWII many in that generation felt that everyone, including Clinton, had an obligation to serve their country whenever called upon, and those who rejected that obligation were to be scorned.
The backlash against George W. Bush was different, because unlike Clinton he never showed any fundamental disagreement with Vietnam, yet still worked the system to avoid the front lines. This criticism reached critical mass when he pursued war in Iraq, earning him the "chickenhawk" name since he was eager to wage war without seriously serving in one. And there's always been a small but notable case for the draft from the left (Harlem Rep. Charlie Rangel being the most famous) on the grounds that if we're going to force people to go to war, all people, privileged or not, should be equally forced to serve. (Of course, as we saw with Vietnam, there were many ways to get out of the draft if you had the resources.)
My own position is more philosophical and extreme: any society that values liberty would never compel people to serve against their will, especially if that service could easily result in death, the greatest loss of liberty.
