2013 pearl jam would go out of their way for that kinda crossover success. see: the fixer.

1998 pearl jam just recorded an old, kinda odd song for their fan club, and it accidentally became their biggest single.

lest we forget, there were commercials for Yield in 1998, and their first video in 6 years.

Very good point. And they didn't half-ass the video either.

but no overt intentions to draw in a larger audience w/ more pop sounding songs.

I would've been much less repulsed by Soldier of Love, which was a much better song, and certainly less annoying. But I stand by my word, I hate Last Kiss. And my "anti-PJ" friends make fun of it every chance they get. Even when I try to explain to them that it was just a song they recorded for fun and it was never meant to be their largest commercial success. If only those damn radio DJ's would've left it alone, then I'm certain I'd be much more fond of it.

But wait a sec, can I change my vote? The Fixer video  Wtf was that all about?

If only those damn radio DJs had left it alone, they wouldn't have raised all that money for refugees and my music cred would remain unsullied. Damn radio DJs!

Yeah, but that commercial was awesome instead of an embarrassment.

if people spent their time bitching about how the target commercial wasn't very good, rather than bitching about the fact that it existed, I'd be a happier man

Well, to be fair the Yield commercial was for Yield, not for Yield and K-Mart.

which, of course, we all ran out and bought exclusively from either the band or small record stores.

Come on, stip. You're being disingenuous. The Yield TV spot is an understated 30-second ad for the album, consistent with its themes and imagery. The Backspacer ad is an obnoxious shill for Target, featuring the band performing in front of giant Target logos. It's a silly comparison.

yeah they were different.

Still i wasn´t surprised about the Target commercial. It was a part of the deal they made, and the fact is they release the record themselves with Target as a partner, like Sony in their past.
The difference is that record labels almost dont exist anymore and big retail places like Target are the new Business partners.

i get that for an old fan this hurts, the same with the oracle show, the main fact is i think they are as independent now as they were in the 90s or maybe more.

Stupid argument. Plenty of bands thrive in the modern music environment without doing an awful commercial like that.

and others dont. Why is "stupid" my argument? its just my point of view..i can be mistaken, but stupid?

They made a deal that included a target commercial for THEIR record. It was the same video they shoot for their single, with some Target logos.
I get Stip point about the Yield commercial and i dont think its the same situation here, but its very similar.

Guess some old pj fans are still thinking about this band as they were Fugazi. They never were Fugazi and they are not Kiss either.

No one is saying they are or ever were Fugazi. But there are plenty out there who when the Target deal/ad dropped and the Oracle show was announced were complete apologists saying that it's a new music environment and this is how you survive, and that's a load of horse shit. Pearl Jam does what's convenient for them, even if the end result is far less than ideal. It's shown in their approach to their music and in the way they run themselves as a business.
