I'm not sure why people find it difficult to believe people would chose to defend family over principles in a war. This isn't difficult to understand. Everyone makes that decision for themselves.

The various statues were allowed to be put for a practical reason: reconciliation. i don't know if it worked, though.

Museums.

At least some should be preserved as monuments to the White reaction to the civil rights movement. We don't exactly have a dearth of icons of human culture. Imagine having a large collection of post-Superbus artifacts. That would be fascinating to view.
