“I didn’t know until doing this album with Eddie how much he was into music from that period in the mid-to-late ’80s,” he remarks. “I always think of him as liking The Who and then Minutemen and Fugazi and stuff like that. But doing this record with him, we talked a lot about it. Obviously, he likes Pete Townshend, but then we started talking about the guys he had on his albums in the ’80s who went on to be in Big Country. He has a real appreciation for this particular sound and Peter Gabriel and all this great stuff where rock music developed or what it turned into in the ’80s. And I never imagined Eddie really listening to that kind of production or anything. That was one of the greatest moments of my life, going up to Seattle and just listening to records with him.”

It would've been interesting to hear more about which albums and artists they were listening. When Bruce compliments Ed for the melodies and asks the influences Ed lists the typical Jackson 5, Beatles, The Who, Bruce, The Band, Split Enz, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Fugazi and Mudhoney which I feel is lacking the stuff Klinghoffer is talking about.

It's also interesting that he says to Bruce that they wrote all the music pretty much together, but then kind of takes all the credit by explaining how this what you get when you put all his influences in a blender. He does mention about Watt coming up with a riff etc. but it would've been interesting to hear more about the role Klinghoffer, Watt and Smith had in the song writing process.

Gigaton helped us through the start of this crazy bullshit and now I feel Earthling is giving me the energy I knew I needed but had no way of providing for myself. Thank Christ for music.

I don't like the idea of Eddie with another band, feels weird to me. I also don't like solo albums that aren't really solo albums. I've always really liked that Eddie did almost everything on ITW by himself.

also if you haven't seen it yet i highly recommend the delightful conversation between Bruce and our guy. so cool to see them relate on songwriting and the like.

i'm sure someone (stip?) has said this in the last 50 pages but to me this album is about communication and connecting. From the Echo Victor reaching through the fog to his dad singing on the last track, it's a guy once stifled by his lack of connectivity who now has the vocabulary to reach out and say the words that get our synapses to fire once again. his dad's voice on "on my way" is like a lost beacon from outer space that's been sent to us through ed.

all we have is each other, gents. we're all on our way. act accordingly.
