I get it, but Rocker seemed like as good a dart throw as anybody. Which was my only surprise when they didn't take him. I also forgot about just how many arms Chaim had traded for to build up the system depth.numbers wrote:You dont draft for need in baseball, half of these players will never even make the major leagues, and it will be years before the ones that do arrive.elliseamos wrote:But they need pitchers and now will use over slot money for this kid, when they could have done so later in the draft.numbers wrote:I dont pretend to know anything about these players, but he was universally ranked as the top prospect in the draft.elliseamos wrote:They do?Simple Torture wrote:They think Mayer is better?elliseamos wrote:Why didn't they take Rocker?
He could be amazing, who knows, but if you need pitching take pitchers.

Well none of those arms seem to be well thought of by scouts. My instinct was to go pitcher with this pick just because a starting pitcher is more bang for your buck than a position player, but if the top ranked guy falls to you, you take him.

I could see Houck coming up this week, too. Duran is trickier because they have to free up a 40-man spot.Norris wrote:why didn't they call up a pitcher?

They have an actual immediate roster need for Duran. Santana and Marwin are on the DL. I wouldn’t be surprised if Houck is up by the end of the weekend and they go with a 6 man rotation for a turn or two.

The other scenario is that they alternate Houck and Whitlock in the role Whitlock has been in all year, resting Whitlock's arm a bit before September without shutting him down.

I think Richards is one bad start away from getting stashed away on the DL for the rest of the year as well.

Probably. But you still need to clear a 40-man spot (since Sale is on the 60-day IL), so someone is getting DFA'd.numbers wrote:Someone will be hurt by then guaranteed.Simple Torture wrote:Probably saving him for Sale's activation.numbers wrote:I think Richards is one bad start away from getting stashed away on the DL for the rest of the year as well.

Re: Boston Red Sox Thread
My favorite thing about Sale is that when he pitches poorly, he doesn't say "hey these are major league hitters what can ya do, I had good stuff" or cry and moan like Garrett Richards. He basically goes in front of the media and says "I am ashamed and I want to die." It's tremendous.
