first Amazon review i read says the following about this movie:

This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. Vulgar, pretentious, incoherent, and nearly unwatchable. The film maker had a vague notion of what he was trying to do, but failed miserably. Even a bunch of really good actors wandered lost in a vague notion. Lennard Pinth Garnell says: really not very good at all.

i'm unsurprised...

i don't honestly give a damn about amazon reviews, but felt harry lime was deserving of one.

Ahh. Well, Magnolia is a perfectly fine film. Well-drawn characters, strong performances, plenty of emotional gravitas to go around, and not a whole lot of time where you feel like you've watched this particular moment in a thousand other movies. It just suffered from the level of praise it got when it first came out (and, yeah, okay, since then as well). Sort of like how if every critic went around insisting that Harold and Maude was the greatest film ever made, people might watch it and go "Well, that was incredibly disappointing." But you wouldn't want to be one of those people who ended up not watching Harold and Maude because someone else made too much of it, either.

Actually, I haven't watched Magnolia in probably ten years, now. I should do that sometime.
