That's why I think Invincible works so damn well - he leans all the way in on what could otherwise be considered "cheesy" but the earnestness of the emotion combined with just enough tongue in cheek ("Echo Victor") gets it across the finish line.

I couldn't agree more, I love this line for the humour combined with the subtlety; he hasn't given surfing an entire fuckin verse so it works all the better

If an EV solo album boasting "The Haves" as advance single can bring me this much joy, I officially cast everything I once thought irrevocably true about this band into the sea for said album's creator to surf upon. Let Watt produce, let Ed write, let Mike shred, give Boom a scat vocal, I don't care -- time is long, life is short, save your predictions, burn your assumptions.

Indeed. As much as I'm enjoying Earthling, I don't quite love the idea of Watt & PJ, but, also, fuck it. Onward. Let's find out.

That being said, I'd wonder why they wouldn't go with Josh Evans again. He and Jeff were the MVPs of Gigaton.

That would be a slightly strange choice, at least for my preferences, because in making Gigaton they managed to course correct so many of the things that IMO had plagued their previous two records. Who knows what would happen with Watt producing, but to be that purposeful about changing the way you write and produce your record and then never follow up on what it could offer you seems odd.

I just got home from the hospital and something happened on the way home that, let's just say, put me in a mood to go home and cry to "The Haves" - I guess I just unlocked what it might mean to me, and that emotional connection which isn't always immediately apparent was always just *so* Ed Ved / PJ

now if only "Long Way" revealed itself like that (it won't)
