McParadigm wrote:Ahh. Well, Magnolia is a perfectly fine film. Well-drawn characters, strong performances, plenty of emotional gravitas to go around, and not a whole lot of time where you feel like you've watched this particular moment in a thousand other movies. It just suffered from the level of praise it got when it first came out (and, yeah, okay, since then as well). Sort of like how if every critic went around insisting that Harold and Maude was the greatest film ever made, people might watch it and go "Well, that was incredibly disappointing." But you wouldn't want to be one of those people who ended up not watching Harold and Maude because someone else made too much of it, either.

Actually, I haven't watched Magnolia in probably ten years, now. I should do that sometime.
Also, Aimee Mann!

i don't have netflix because i am a poor person and cannot afford even the paltry monthly fee. I do have amazon prime because it came as part of a package deal when i bought a kindle last year for my long train commutes... to work... which i no longer have and so don't have netflix because i am a poor person and...

i don't honestly give a damn about amazon reviews, but felt harry lime was deserving of one.
amazon reviews mean way more to me than 'expert' reviews. well, i guess it depends on the product.

Rewatched Nebraska last night. I suppose that, when a movie is at least partially a geographical exploration of an area that happens to be your backyard, it's always really hard to not focus on all the ways they got it totally wrong. But I will say they captured old Plains state men (and houses) almost to a T.

I could have done without some of the wincingly ridiculous stuff, like almost everything about the entitled fat sons or the mother's brazen profanity (feel free to keep the talk about driving time, though...I think I've actually witnessed that conversation). But Bruce Dern's portrayal was so crushingly perfect that it kind of weirded me out, and Will Forte was unexpectedly perfect for a role that was really a near-passive audience vehicle.

THIS

Anyway, this weekend I saw:

All Is Lost - 4.5/5
Nebraska - 4.5/5
The White Masai - 4/5

Oh, and I also saw 1408, which was barftastic.

Blue is the warmest color.

I liked it, it isnt a masterpiece, but its very well done, and those two girls are awesome. Great casting.
And those sex scenes...thats how you fuck when you are in love.

Just watched Remember Me, a truly shitty and boring movie starring Robert Pattinson and other people who try and fail to do US accents. It's two hours of utter boredom followed by an ending that manages to be both lame and in unbelievably poor taste.

Yeah, well, I'm going to allow myself a pass.
Color me surprised.
But really though the characters aren't interesting. I'll stick by that.
Valid criticism. Obviously, I disagree, and last time we talked about this, you hadn't seen enough of the show for me to trust that judgement. But I won't fault anyone for disliking a show/movie because they don't find the characters interesting, if they've, you know, watched it.

That is Dr. Daniel Davy. An old professor and friend of mine who passed away, quite unexpectedly, last week.

Totally missed this. Good for you, lenny. You already have better taste than the likes of Joe & Malloy. How did you like it?
