The reason the measles is so, well, viral, is that the microbe is so small and hardy that it is able to stay suspended in the air where an infected person coughed or sneezed for up to two hours, making it one of the only viruses that can exist as a true aerosol.

Now there are conflicting reports on whether the new coronavirus can. The studies suggesting that it can be aerosolized are only preliminary, and other research contradicts it, finding no aerosolized coronavirus particles in the hospital rooms of Covid-19 patients.

The weight of the evidence suggests that the new coronavirus can exist as an aerosol — a physics term meaning a liquid or solid (the virus) suspended in a gas (like air) — only under very limited conditions, and that this transmission route is not driving the pandemic. But “limited” conditions does not mean “no” conditions, underlining the need for health care workers to have high levels of personal protection, especially when doing procedures such as intubation that have the greatest chance of creating coronavirus aerosols. “I think the answer will be, aerosolization occurs rarely but not never,” said microbiologist and physician Stanley Perlman of the University of Iowa. “You have to distinguish between what’s possible and what’s actually happening.”

I heard on NPR yesterday it disperses in the air rather quickly. The bigger droplets are the ones that are getting on all the surfaces.

It can survive on metals and plastics way longer than 4 hours.

I can't find the picture, but every morning on the Today Show when they talk about wearing a mask, they put a picture in the mix of this couple walking and the guy has the mask up on his forehead so that he can smoke. It's my favorite god damned picture ever. He's just such an idiot!
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

This is a Q&A with someone from John Hopkins, seems to answer the questions here.

Machamer: What's getting a lot of press and is presented out of context is that the virus can last on plastic for 72 hours—which sounds really scary. But what's more important is the amount of the virus that remains. It's less than 0.1% of the starting virus material. Infection is theoretically possible but unlikely at the levels remaining after a few days. People need to know this.

While the New England Journal of Medicine study found that the COVID virus can be detected in the air for 3 hours, in nature, respiratory droplets sink to the ground faster than the aerosols produced in this study. The experimental aerosols used in labs are smaller than what comes out of a cough or sneeze, so they remain in the air at face-level longer than heavier particles would in nature

Random? Is anything random? I'll ask my friend Carlos, he's a scientist. But first... the weather

My sister went up from Miami last week to work in some NYC hospitals. Her quick texts regarding Sinai were:

"Literally a war zone"
"All of these nurses will have PTSD"

She refused to go into more detail than that. She said she'd tell us about it once it's all over.

I believe all public beaches and areas in Minnesota are closed through the summer.

WI state parks are open (and free) for now, but I can't imagine that will last. The trails we hiked were really congested last weekend.
