I heard about the Minnesota beaches; that's a big deal in a land of over 10,000 lakes.
Our (GA) state parks are open and they've been crowded. Some of the more scenic ones in the northern part of the state sent a letter to the governor asking to be closed as well due to the crowds.

Connecticut made all our state parks free a couple years ago, and they're seeing a lot of traffic now, so who knows how long they'll stay open. Hope they don't close, because it's not like there's anywhere else to go these days.

The numbers in NYC are just horrifying (and this despite the fact that it's looking like social distancing may help the city and state avoid the worst case scenario, at least for now). 806 people died in a 24 hour span this week; for context, 600 people died of homicide in the past two years combined.

And this is likely a significant undercount, as hospitals aren't taking people in distress who they would normally take any other time. The Chief Medical Examiner is saying about 200 people are dying at home per day in the city, compared to about 20 or 25 on average in the city before the virus hit.

A few have already closed due to those not adhering to the social distancing requirement. My bar staff got together a few Sundays ago at Hammonaset and they said it was like the middle of July, mind you it was overcast and pretty damn cold. I'd like to see them stay open though I'd also like to see the instance rate in CT drop as well. The @CTStateParks twitter has been keeping up pretty well as far as parking goes.

I spoke with my buddy yesterday who is the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner yesterday and he said pretty much all his office is doing right now is going to homes to pick up the dead and picking up homeless bodies from the streets.

Is there any conversation to be had regarding number of deaths compared to 9/11? Or was that because it was brown people and the enemy that we were more upset about that?

Will we just go back to partisan bullshit bickering or will the country maybe come together finally if even for a brief moment such as 9/11?

These types of emotions are barely registering at all in rural America. 9/11 spawned Toby Keith songs. What COVID19 will bring us is more partisan divide, especially if our efforts to social distance bring the projected deaths down under six figures. If that happens you'll hear things like : the liberal media was just trying to take down Trump, ect.

America fucking sucks

If 40,000 deaths from guns each year in our country hasn't brought us together, this liberal media, Joe Biden loving, bullshit of a kungflu virus surely isn't going to do it.

edited for "kungflu"....ranting typo!

Experience suggests they are far too certain of their own definitive superiority to even process such an offer as genuine.

I mean, the flip side of this (the anti-Lib/SJW) has never really seemed any better. It's all just a projection of feelings and signalling. So I guess the answer to Strat's question is "no, unity is unlikely at this time."
