I like 80s Peter Gabriel and Split Enz a great deal, but this record does nothing for me.

Maybe I'm not invested enough in 'Eddie Vedder' to be carried away by his endearing personality, his renewed enthusiasm, etc.

I just think the songs are really weak.

I don't hate it but I do think this is a one-and-doner for me. My favorite songs were "Try" (which sounds like Ed doing a Frank Turner folk-punk sort of thing) and "Mrs. Mills" which has some nice touches (although it feaures that strained Ed writing - "to none of them she ever will belong"). Even then, I found both of them charming, but wasn't bowled over by either. Aside from "The Haves," which remains one of the worst songs I have ever heard by anyone, I don't think any of it is bad; it's just an extremely OK album I will probably never listen to again

I listened on Friday. Can't really be bothered to search it on Spotify right now, but I'll probably spin the record if my Fresh Pressed version gets here before July.

You know how everyone loved The Force Awakens when it came out, but 6 years on everyone agrees it sucks an unbelievable amount of ass?

I actually love this album, but the intro to Power of Right does and likely will always give me very strong Cars (the Pixar film starring Lightning McQueen, not the band starring Ric Ocasek) vibes.

I disagree with this take. Better or worse, it feels like EV is almost always enthusiastic. His verve simply needed a vehicle other than Pearl Jam to make sense for that rough stretch between S/T and Gigaton. At times he found it, mostly on solo efforts, but most times he did not. His enthusiasm is the weak link on those bad PJ albums. Ironically, the two albums he sounds the most exhausted on are two of the band's greatest and most beloved (Riot Act and No Code.)

Being invested in Eddie Vedder may have something to do with people's liking of this record but to be honest, even though I'm a huge Ed fan, I would not be gushing over this thing if I didn't think the songs were good. I wasn't posting about Ukulele songs because it was not something that made me go "wow". There were a few nice songs, none were offensive but I don't really seek that record out. ITW was better but again, I'd be OK if he never released it. This one seems an essential release to me, something I am actually glad he put out. It is the quality of the songs and how good he himself sounds. And this deserves repeating: he sounds mostly fantastic on this album.

I didn't like Ukulele Songs - I thought it was a disappointing rehash of the original recordings - but I really liked Into the Wild a lot.

I could absolutely get behind an EV solo career that used songs like Long Nights or The Wolf as a starting point.

What I'm reading here is that you're all in on the upcoming On My Way/River Cross split 7", spenno.

It's not a fair comparison, but the other day I listened to this Van Morrison song right after some of the new EV material and I started thinking how it's exactly the kind of thing I think he'd be great at but doesn't remotely go near:



Slow tempos, moody rumination, sparse instrumentation, a sense of real place and atmosphere - and that sonorous, idiosyncratic voice acting effectively as the lead instrument in the ensemble, holding it all together.

I don't think he has it in him.
