Great performance/awful movie: The Steve Albini biopic

OK, but the characters are well-written. My question is, if the actor doesn't have something good to work with, can the performance be good?

NBK is a much better example of your point, Leaving Las Vegas, is excellent.

Let us not forget that you have not seen the movie, but for some reason still have an opinion about it.
i don't need to see a movie to have an opinion about it, but you keep doing you
I haven’t seen Oppenheimer, but think it’s probably excellent, and will probably win Best Picture.
But I do think to have a valid negative opinion on Barbie (in numerous posts and threads), you need to have seen it.

I'm sure they play the roles fine, but a truly great performance requires great material. Great gymnasts can't get perfect 10s by doing simple routines. Great actors adequately playing basic roles isn't worthy of high praise.
I'm just talking about individual roles. The overall movie can suck. There are plenty of great performances in bad movies.

Yes, but also consider Daniel Day Lewis in TWBB. From what I've heard, there isn't a whole lot there on the page for the character, but the collaboration between actor and director created a legendary performance. A good script can contribute to a great performance, while a bad one can hinder one, but sometimes it's best to just vaguely point in the right vicinity.

tragabigzanda wrote:Honestly no problem with Barbie or Ken getting best actor nods, because I think it’s fair to divorce the performance from the material. But best picture would be as Ruddo said, a grab for younger viewers.
The movie wasn't made for younger viewers, though. Younger people, in my experience, like it much less. So I'm not sure this take holds water.

Of course Barbie was made for young viewers. I think the best thing about the movie was how they hyped it with the whole pink thing, the soundtrack, etc...
Im sure it will gain a lot of nominations yeah.

74.6% of Barbie's audience was under 29 years old, it was biggest among Gen Z and young millennial women

Is this something anyone actually wants to get into/unpack? Probably not. But let me know if I'm wrong.

Also, going back to Barbie and Oscars... I think there's more than a fair chance that it gets nominated for Best Song, too. I won't be surprised to see 7 nods.
