Most of these hang ups would not be noticed by most people. It's baffling to me that you guys see this as such an issue. SW has always had these moments. It helps the kids and the non-nerds of the world.durdencommatyler wrote:I feel like if I'd never seen Star Wars, I wouldn't have thought anything about it. But there are plenty of other things that, even without knowing those movies, I would know are references and winks to those movies.BurtReynolds wrote:Its not a huge deal, but it was definitely a "see? see how Han got his blaster? see?!" moment.
The fact that its given any significance at all is silly. It's completely inconsequential where he got it.

I mean it's not a deal breaker or anything for that reason. neither is the stuff in r1. They haven't made any of the fan service stuff integral to the plot.
It is worse when it's dialogue. I love TFA and think Ford is great in it it but the 'I like this' line about the bowcaster is stupid, and harder to ignore

I mean, let's not get it twisted. These new movies have my entire heart. I liked Star Wars just fine but it was really TFA that made me fall in love with it. That and The Clone Wars animated series. None of these things are perfect. All of them have their weak moments. But I've liked or loved all four of the new-era films.
The Force Awakens A
Rogue One A+
The Last Jedi A+
Solo B+
And I rank all four of them above Return of the Jedi.
Still... there is plenty in each film to roll your eyes at.

Just got out of this in my fifth spin. But my pals first.
He was wrapped up in it. So excited and he’s only casual as fans go.
He laughed his ass off too. He got it.
And it’s his birthday.
And the theatre was packed.
He used to post here. He says hello.

This whole "shit on the OT to excuse the new movies" thing is the most annoying thing

I'm certainly not trying to do that. I really love the "cheesy" quality of the OT. Some of my favorite sci-fi and fantasy of the '80s had that quality. The OT, The Beastmaster, Flash Gordon, The Ice Pirates.
And I'm on record as hating TFA and TLJ. I'm not going to bother with Solo.

I think SOLO is more in that former bunch you mentioned.run2death wrote:I'm certainly not trying to do that. I really love the "cheesy" quality of the OT. Some of my favorite sci-fi and fantasy of the '80s had that quality. The OT, The Beastmaster, Flash Gordon, The Ice Pirates.

The answer may surprise.

Eh this was always a meat and potato band, tbh. Verse chorus verse bridge solo. If I want artistic adventure, I have other groups I like that do that. Sometimes I just want to rock. As long as Ed is singing and the band is grooving...that’s all Pearl Jam really is to me.LoathedVermin72 wrote:This whole "shit on the OT to excuse the new movies" thing is the most annoying thing

The Stormtrooper hitting his head on the door wasn’t intentional, tho. You can say a movie is hokey just because they left an accidental goof in it.durdencommatyler wrote:I think we just interpret this stuff very differently. I'm not sure that I can come up with an example that would satisfy you. I mean, honestly, just the design of Darth Vader. And the way he keeps pointing at that guy even after he's finished talking in ANH. That leaps to mind. It's hilarious and dopey as hell. The storm trooper who hits his head on the door. Leia's weird British accent that comes and goes. Virtually every line Han delivers.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I honestly can’t think of any moments I would describe that way. Example?
We just absorb this stuff and filter it differently. No bigs.
And you lose serious Star Wars fan credits for thinking Vader’s design is hilarious.
