Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

i don’t know your mates, and so this doesn’t necessarily apply to them, but i am weary of the rehabilitation by hip young contrarians of directors like baz.

I watched this over the weekend, and despite it being really generic I quite enjoyed it

Generic is not a word I would use to describe it

Elvis was unspeakably bad (and this is where Trag is once again wrong, spouting off about something he knows nothing about). It is not just generic Baz Luhrmann fare. It is a uniquely terrible movie.

I watched one heck of a movie last night. The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On. Japan, 1987. pre-sages Joshua Oppenheimer, but somehow goes to another level. It takes place in the eighties and follows a Japanese veteran of WWII who saw atrocities during his service in New Guinea. He has since served time for murder, for firing a slingshot at the Emperor, and for distributing pornographic images of the Emperor. He is now going around, interviewing and physically attacking witnesses and suspected perpetrators of murder and cannibalism among Japanese officers and soldier in New Guinea near the end of the war, trying to discover the truth. The man is less the subject of the film than another of the filmmakers. It's fascinating and troubling.

I think Burt would like it.

It's streaming on the Criterion Channel right now

Watched The Homesman (terrible movie name) 2014.

Wow, this was bleak. Didn't know what to expect, but this one was dark. Kinda ok. 6.5/10

Look forward to finishing it, I only saw about half, before going to bed. My wife finished it, and she also seemed to really enjoy it.

Last Night in Soho. Started out interestingly enough, but the last 30 minutes or so were pretty bad. Not funny at all also.

Elvis was bad, but I found it very watchable. "Annoyingly Watchable"

Tom Hanks is ridiculous in this.

Tom Hanks is fundamentally incapable of playing a role that even borders on character actor territory.
