Yeah just get a glass cutter and cut the pane that is above the plates, reach in and grab them.

That's one option. But it only really works if those plates are actually valuable. Replacing the cut glass is an expense, and also a hassle. I think we're on the right track, but there may still be a better option.

You probably can't slide the door up because of the ceiling. Besides, I think it would make more sense to slide it down.

I considered this heavily. I went with up because it would work in my own kitchen, and it's not like I have ridiculously high ceilings or anything; meanwhile, a downward movement would almost certainly hit the counter in every kitchen in the world.
