It's interesting that, while it has increased its number of plays at alternative radio (typically the format Pearl Jam most dominates), its audience size shrank quite a bit there. This means that some of the format's larger stations gave it a little bit of a shot last week, then dropped it from their playlist. The may come back to it if it can break into the top ten there (it's at #12 right now, up from #16 after the first seven days).
what does estimated audience size mean?
All of the stations currently playing the song have an estimation of their typical audience size at different times of the day. When they report playing a track, they also report the time that they played it...allowing for an estimation of just how large the song's total potential audience was, last week (in millions).

didn't the audience size technically get bigger? Certainly not relative to the amount of plays it got, but might that mean that the audience didn't expand but the places that played it increased it in the rotation?

It got bigger overall, because some of the other formats started giving it more daytime plays. But Alternative radio, which is a biggie and typically the band's bread and butter, either started pushing it towards the overnight hours or had a few stations drop it. It went from 4.2 million people there to 3.4.

It's the same number of actual people in the RM community, once you eliminate all the second and third accounts.

ahh, okay. that's a pretty fast drop for a song that had a good opening week, isn't it?

Depends. If it's just a matter of moving it to the evening hours, that seems reasonable. For the first week, it's a big "hey, look what's new!" moment, and you toss it on during high traffic hours. After that, you shift it towards the evening and overnight...where it either proves itself or passes away.
If stations are dropping it already...that's something else. But it's still gaining at Active Rock...a format that Pearl Jam singles have historically not been "heavy enough" to achieve big numbers at.

Are radio stations really an accurate barometer of a song's success anymore?
As a weird aside, I heard "Of the Girl" on our local "progressive" radio station last night.

Radio play still tends to correlate really well with other indicators of success. For example, Just Breathe and the Fixer were both strong at radio. They were also the most purchased post-2000 songs at iTunes, two of the only non-Ten tracks to stick around in the band's most listened to songs at last.fm, and the most searched for at YouTube.
I think that, as streaming digital audio options become more and more popular, radio will get diminished. For now, though, its audience size hasn't been affected by digital the way something like album sales have.

I like the updates. Just curious - how are you acquiring this data? are you in the business?

allaccess.com gathers the data. It's an industry resource for radio programmers, but it's free to create an account.
I just figure most people don't want to be bothered to check it, so I toss the info up here.

It has less popularity than Chiddy Bang's Mind Your Manners on Spotify.
