Week 1 marathon training retrospective: Speed kills.
My legs are fucked right now. The mile repeats were fine, but the MP run really sucked the life out of my week. Kinda felt like I never really recovered from that run.

Happy holidays, runners.
To r2d's list I would add "best mean mug": Troy Sandoval

Decided to sit out until the new year, need to get healed.
I've thought a lot about my diet in 18-19. I feel like this is a place I can unlock some potential. I need a meal plan that I can just eat every single week. I'm disciplined enough to do it. Any places to go for this info?

I watched a documentary about the Sri 3,100-mile race last night.
I like 24-hour races, but there's nothing that makes me want to run around a half-mile block in Queens 6,000 times.

Oh man, my trail running is fucking garbage right now. I was sooooo slow on the technical stuff today.

I wish each of my runs was a trail run.

I'm still sitting out. Knee feels fine but the right base of my hip is still pretty sore

My run yesterday.... I thought I'd stop before 1 mile because of the pain in my right knee. But I pushed through and ultimately felt fine.

Debating whether or not I'll do the Death March again this year.
It'll be between my goal marathon and my summer ultra in Ireland.
I don't want the pack runs to destroy my ultra training, but I also really wanna erase the memories of last year's race.

I'm going to take tomorrow off in the real hope/goal of doing a New Year's Eve run and a New Year's Day run. No way can I handle three in a row right now. But I want to end the year strong and start 2019 with a run, too.

Week 2 marathon training retrospective: Christmas fucked my schedule.
Schedule got all screwed up, but I did manage to get in both my MP and speedwork sessions. Trail run was great, but holy hell was the trail packed with hikers. It made going fast all but impossible.

After a weeK or so off both problem points on my right leg are still a little sore. I can run through it but the last thing I need is a chronicly aggravated IT band.

Thanks! That was fun. I think I'm gonna enjoy the speed workouts more than I thought I would.

are you doing the stretch where you kinda cross your legs and touch your toes? it is the master stretch for the IT if you work it properly

Matt Fitzgerald's Racing Weight and New Rules for Marathon Nutrition are good... I don't follow them religiously or anything but I've gotten some good recipes from those books.
If I'm feeling ambitious I'll use the instant pot to meal prep a bunch of chicken breast, rice, black beans, or soup on the weekend.
Mostly I just try to a) count calories, b) eat a filling breakfast (oatmeal or breakfast burrito), c) have a light lunch, d) stick to fruit/veg/nuts for snacks during the day, because once I get home it all goes to hell.

I just keep it simple as well.
2,500 calories a day with lots of rice, chicken and veg. I also generally limited myself to 2 beers a day.
I usually have a protein bar for breakfast, a light lunch, then fairly substantial dinner.
My runs fair better on a fairly empty stomach, so I'll sometimes skip the protein bar if I have a morning run.
I always drink a glass of chocolate milk after my runs.
I'll occasionally slam a pizza the day before a big training run.

How do you drink 2 beers/day without gaining weight? Tell me your secret.
