Devin Hester still has a career and he can't really catch much either.

There's no real way of knowing if Denard can or can not catch. Since switching from QB, he has had a nerve problem in one of his arms that still needs to heal before we can know for sure.

I am not a fan of the Denard at QB era at Michigan. In fact, It nearly turned me off college football entirely. It just bugged me... but Denard Robinson is more than speed. He is an incredible runner in terms of shiftyness and elusiveness and I would not be at all surprised to see him have a better career than a lot of the other QB's turned receivers, including Randle-El.

Even he's not so sure of that right now ;)

I like the NFL as much as anyone but it's about six weeks too early for me to care too much about the draft. By time it gets here I'll be hyped out. First things first; I'm more interested in the player movements that will happen before the end of April.

I doubt he'd be worth that much, and I thought a cap hit on a trade was a lot worse than a cap hit when you cut a guy, although I could be wrong.
Yeah, im not positive on that either
For cap purposes, most trades works the same as cuts. Looking at Austin's contract, they'd save about $3.5 million in cap space by cutting him, but they could get more (more than $4 million) if they restructured his contract instead. The possible downsides of this are: a) you're fully guaranteeing his salary for 2013, and: b) you're pushing today's cap troubles into future cap years.

What the Cowboys really need to do to get under the cap is to extend Tony Romo's contract. If they do that, then things won't be as painful for them as they could be.

Didn't the Cowboys and Redskins sue over the "ramifications" placed upon them after they treated the uncapped year as an uncapped year?

I didn't rememeber the results of those suits.

I think they dropped the suits, but either way, they didn't go anywhere. Interestingly enough, although the Redskins got docked more, the Cowboys are in far worse shape. You'll be interested to know that the easiest way for the Redskins to get under the cap is to cut DeAngelo Hall.

I'm sure that will be a very difficult cut to make. :) It would be pretty funny though if the Skins did thier usual thing and send a kings ransom of picks north for Darelle Revis.

I wish the Broncos had another Clinton Portis on their roster so they could pull off a sequel to the Champ Bailey trade.

Oh the next trade was going to be Revis for Knowshon Moreno.

He reminds me of Armanti Edwards, who I think finally made a catch this year...about two years after he was drafted.

Peter King reported that Brady signed a three year extension to lessen his cap hit. He gets base salaries of $7 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017. Maybe he's freeing up cash so Bill will sign his security blanket?

Brady and Rogers are two of the more underpaid QBs IMO. In a league with no cap they'd make three times as much, easily.

This is bad news for Joe Flacco if he gets hit with the exclusive franchise tag. The dollar amount for that is the average of the top five highest QB cap numbers in 2013. Brady did have the highest cap number, but this deal knocks him out of the top five, replacing him with Drew Brees. This change means that that tag lost almost $1 million in value. And that number could fall even further, because pretty much everyone in the top ten except for Peyton Manning is liable to have their contracts extended, restructured, or cut.

On another note, deals like this really undercut the notion that the Patriots are the Yankees of the NFL. It's amazing as to how competitive they are every single year without spending a lot of money or getting into cap trouble. I think the Pats are now something like $30 million under the cap now.

I'm really interested to see how Flacco's deal shakes out. I have a lot of respect for Ozzie and the job he's done over there. I kinda expect him to get something reasonable signed.

I hope they dedicate a good portion of that space in an effort to better the defense. But, I bet they leave themselves with as much space as they can and bargain hunting in FA. Maybe. They're light on draft picks this year.

I think the Pats will be players in FA this year, definitely for some secondary players. There's a pretty nice group of CBs/safeties at varying skill/salary levels, more than average for sure. One player who was actually extremely well rated by a few different sites that I can see them taking a look at is Adam Jones, believe it or not. I could see Sean Smith too.

Sean Smith does make sense--I'd like to hear Dolphins' fans reactions on that possibility. One idea that keeps intriguing me if they can't work out a deal with Welker is to sign away Victor Cruz from the Giants. Giving up the 29th overall isn't that big of a price for a player of Cruz's caliber.

This is a good year for the Pats style of free agency: lots of decent players who aren't superstars but could significantly improve a weak unit for not a lot of money.
