I hereby apologize for not listening to this album sooner - it's a much more impressive effort than I expected out of these guys and liked a number of songs immediately.
at the moment I should Live in Salt and Fireproof are stand outs for me - I'm a little iffy on the rest but still impressed.

It is another one of those albums that will pull you in the more you listen to it, which is what I've found to be the case for pretty much all of their albums other than the debut.malice wrote:I hereby apologize for not listening to this album sooner - it's a much more impressive effort than I expected out of these guys and liked a number of songs immediately.

The National are just a wonderful band.

Re: The National | Trouble Will Find Me
Still the album of the year for me. It might even become my favorite National album.
I'm somewhere in the crowd here. The lineup at that stage was: The National - Portishead - Sigur Rós. It was just perfect.

Okay so Pink Rabbits may have taken the lead now (over I Should Live In Salt) as my #1 song for this album. What a soulful song, great album all around.

Anyone else think this is Matt's best album in terms of singing and vocal melodies?

I could agree with that, vocally I think it's easily one of his best.Mike wrote:Anyone else think this is Matt's best album in terms of singing and vocal melodies?

I feel bad for the folks who left after the first set and did not stick around for the encoreintodeep wrote:Seeing them tonight.

The songs from the new album were very good live. It helped me with some of them for sure.

Spend some more time with it or leave it; it's not up to anyone else to find the enjoyment for you.--- wrote:liked alligator, loved boxer, liked high violet, put to sleep too quickly by trouble will find me to form an opinion

Trouble Will Find me was kinda boring to me on my first few casual listens, but it grew on me fairly quickly. Like you I only liked Alligator and loved Boxer, but High Violet was great to me from the start. Still my favorite National album.--- wrote:liked alligator, loved boxer, liked high violet, put to sleep too quickly by trouble will find me to form an opinion

Re: The National | Trouble Will Find Me
I'm digging the songwriting more these days, and the vocal melodies too, but the lyrics really grate me. The supposedly witty one-liners sound too contrived and eager to impress.
It's still a much lesser album than HV and Boxer, but not as bad as I considered it to be a couple of months ago.

i still MUCH much prefer this record to High Violet.
it's been solidly my top 3 National records since a few weeks after it's release.

This album is MUCH more accessible than High Violet. To me, it's a perfect amalgam of Alligator and Boxer.
