The downside to the "live" video is that when they do perform it front of a crowd it will be much played much too fast, so it's like they gave us the icing before the cake.

2nd chorus and 3rd chorus lyrics the same or very close.
From memory, the Even Flow video is a mix between the Abbruzzese studio version and the live version from the Moore Theatre.

The Fixer video was also a live performance as far as I recall. It also really, really sucks.

They've done that for three albums now, and also for Even Flow and Alive (I think?).
Alive. And Riot Act.
Ah yes, Riot Act too.

That "Waahaaah!" Even Flow video is a live version, isn't it?
Rerecorded during the sessions that birthed Dirty Frank.

Please don't remind me again that that ever happened...
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

The Fixer live version was fine. I think the song's fine. I just didn't believe Ed's performance of it.

So profound.

I think one of the things keeping me out of this song is that its like 50% chorus. And it is pretty, but that 'needs mer chorus' thing is something that drives me nuts about a lot of modern pop....25 seconds of verse, 45 seconds of chorus...it feeds the energy level an helps make a song seem "big," but it's just not for me.

i am having a hard time telling the chorus from the verse, especially since the chorus lyrics don't really repeat, do they?
I don't think it's 50% chorus - it's actually very little like a 'modern pop' chorus - there isn't some short lyrical/melodic hook repeat ad naseum till you want to shoot the person - and the song is over 5 minutes long. I really like how the arrangement keeps building and manages to sustain with melodic interest unlike ATW and Unthought Known. It also seems to avoid going for the big hook that would really annoy after a few listens.

Yup.

I think anyone who loves live Pearl Jam and is relying on that to redeem this song might... be... surprised.

Perhaps just metaphysical redemption.

It feels like a 70's Elton John type of mid tempo ballad. Rocket Man, Daniel, Tiny Dancer, Your Song. That's a massive compliment btw.

I'd agree - the 'fragile life' line and 'could be for me next time' are particularly connecting and it was the first time I've had a really deep emotional response to a song since Riot Act. I'll avoid the soppy exposition about having kids and realising how fragile life is (but it is something that hits you hard). It's one of those observations that is so banal yet when you actually grasp it is a truly enormous moment. It's not just kids that give you that perspective but it is a different experience.

The other part (sirens coming for you) is that your the old guy now yet your kid sees you as invincible. I now have to cope with the knowledge that I am actually totally vincible but know the expectation from my two young sons - again, not just a parent thing but it does give you an unavoidable perspective on things.

Of course if this is where the song is coming from and you don't quite relate to those feelings then it is possibly just Inside Job Part II. I'm disappointed Jeff didn't use his 12-string to give a bit more of a homage to Cheap Trick.
I think it was Billy Connolly who said as he got older he found himself crying more and more, even over mindless sentimental commercials. Since my son's birth I feel that.

It's pretty much like the discussion of Sirens over here but they have no idea how to respond to negative comments.

The xylophones on the ending still kind of ruin that vision but otherwise I agree.
