A few quotes from "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Poe, a reference picked up by the Rolling Stone review:

Yup. Big cathartic moment.

Crazy... I love that part of the song...

Yeah, I think that part would be a great deal more effective had they let Ed's voice naturally ring out (perhaps bring some room sound into the mix) than use that LISTEN TO THIS SPECIAL EFFECT effect.

Though I enjoyed the album a lot more on my last few spins, I still struggle with this song; not because I don't like it but because I do and I find some of the production and performance choices kind of a bummer.

This is one song on which I absolutely adore the production. That note with the echo effect is the biggest spine chilling moment on this album for me after Ed's singing in the outro of Infallible.

This song contains one or two production touches hoping to call back Ten, I think. If you're down with that you'll be OK with this.

Just one person clapping, buried under the mix. Kind of Hummus-style over the rhythm (which I would type out if I knew my "clapping notation" well enough). It's nowhere near as overt as LTRP and just adds to the percussive texture.

I was always ok with the production on Ten's ballads. That's probably why I'm loving Pendulum.

Jeff's hypnotic bass is lovely at the "easy come easy go" part when he plays faster.

Yeah using just reverb and delay would have fit the mix better.

Isn't it just reverb used to the extreme?

It's an odd effect. The song is all menacing and echoey and suddenly there's weird inhuman high pitched thing.
