I love all the hot takes of Matt wasn’t a good fit for Pearl Jam etc…as if any of ya know what the band was looking for and what Matt was looking for
Then again this is the same board that wanted a acknowledgement of dirtyfranks suicide on the linear notes of their next album (at the time) so I really shouldn’t be shocked

I’m talking about Gigaton, of course.

Gig has aged poorly outside of the dystopian COVID-era bubble we all lived in from 20-22 (although is not a turd like LB).
DM is a far, far superior record. Thank god Matt did not go out before this latest studio effort and run of shows

Shit. Sigh.
It's a huge loss for sure
Amazing mid to late career work. Probably the last act to achieve something like this before the genre is lost.

sounds spritzy
pearl jam definitely lost a lot of spritz today
Wanted: new drummer
must be able to do 4/4 time 'chlamydic dick' snare intro on command
must be able to tolerate lead singer mascara ploofs and bouts of manopause

Fucking hell. The guy has been dead for god knows how many years and you’re still kicking his corpse?

You know how aging athletes go back to the team that drafted them or where they made their name to retire there before hanging it up? That’s what I’d like to think Matt is doing. His last show should be with Ben and Kim. I love Matt Cameron, and he was the drummer for 50 of my 53 shows, but when I think of him, I always think of Soundgarden first.
Jack Irons saved this band once. I’d like for him to do it one more time - one more album and one more tour so we can know we’re saying goodbye.

i hope the new drummer is someone young
and that it starts a precedent where if one guy retires a young guy replaces him
and then the band can live forever
and the merch machine can live forever

The one thing I don’t get about his message is “more to follow.” Why? Why not have everything you need to say ready to go, especially if this was planned? It only invites speculation from a fan base that doesn’t do well with that. It really does make me worry he got some sudden news about his health. See, we don’t well with speculating.

It's probably related to SG as you theorized above. Finish that last SG album and then retire.

Why? He was in soundgarden and Pearl Jam when they were actually a band. He has plenty of time to wrap up whatever is left of SG while still being in Pearl jam. Pearl Jam isn't an everyday thing these days and certainly we're about to take some time off.
Yea. Fuck speculation cmon guys! Tell us!

Tbh i don’t want new music with anyone else. Just tour with someone back there and try to play more than Ten and Vs.

I love Cameron’s PJ songs but they should retire those now. Except the Fixer. Because who cares what they do with that?
Terrible take. Why retire his songs? They’re great
The only reason i say retire them is because im so tired of defending MC for 27 years and i have nothing left. The haters WIN!
MC is a beast. I will defend him until the day this board dies!
The man doesn't require any of us to defend him. His record speaks for itself.
Goddamn right

Unsurprising given everything that's already been said about the physical impact of being a touring rock drummer in your 60s, but definitely the end of an era and not one I was expecting. I thought it more likely the band would just slowly wind down from regular touring.
Very interested to see what happens now.
I was sure this was how it would go as well, which is the thing that surprises me about the announcement. I kind of figured they viewed PJ as the business they'd wind down together as they started wanting to retire, with fewer live gigs over time. I mean, the Dark Matter push last year was a fair amount of shows, but I could easily see a situation where they played 15-date tours once every few years or something. Matt leaving outright does make me wonder if it was at all a creative decision, even one that clearly seems amicable.

Outside a few tracks from gigaton, there’s not much pj I actually listen to post 2006,including bootlegs so from a music listening standpoint, it doesn’t really matter. I’m glad Matt escaped before PJ complete the stadium greatest hits era transformation that is already 95% in action

We couldn’t even get the band to play them when the guy was in the band. You think they’ll play them now that he’s gone?
