The first disc of ALT is actually their first release for Thrill Jockey, that immediately went out of print (one run only). And then the Mike Watt song was something that was supposed to be included on that release, but didn’t make it to the printer in time.

I’m actually working on a Tortoise mix for Ruddo that leans heavily on every other album of theirs, because ALT is a mixed bag and TNT is something I think should be experience more as an albimZ Happy to share it with you when it’s finished.

Pretty sure. Tortoise was their first full-length, and came out in 1994. Rhythms, Resolutions, & Clusters was a remix of that album, and was released in 1995. Here's what I found on Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortoise_ ... iscography

My history with the band is sort of spotty: Heard the UNKLE remix of DJed, bought TNT when it was new, then completely fell off. Downloaded a zip of their entire discography between BoA and The Catastrophist, made my way through it, but ultimately settled on the following albums as being indispensable:

So funny that WM should bring them up today, because I was just working on that mix last night and was thinking that some of the stuff on BoA is more compelling than I initially thought. And then discovering Ice Ice Gravy last night was a real treat.

I'm determined to take my rightful spot in your top 5 musical soulmate list.

Phew! Those first few bars of Seneca are pretty undeniable for an opening track, but I’m happy to hear you approve of Everglade. I LOVE that song, but I’m not really sure how other Tortoise fans feel about it.

Tangentially related, my one gripe about The Catastrophist is how it sort of peters out with 3-4 mellow, melodic songs.

Also, is I Set My Face To The Hillside as great as I think it is, and therefore worthy of a spot on the mix? It’s like Everglade in that I adore it, but not sure how it might connect for newbs.

Oh yeah, I love "Everglade." TNT is pretty much flawless in my esteem, and one of my favorite albums. The last four tracks run together beautifully. As for "I Set My Face to the Hillside," it might be my favorite Tortoise tune, and I'd say it definitely belongs in a mix. It's a great bridge between two of their influences, with the Spanish guitar/Morricone first half and the nods to Reichian minimalism in the second.

Mono is hit and miss with me, but their new one is pretty great (expect for the cringe-worthy vocals on Breathe).

I saw them once. It was the most awful concert experience I've had, but not because of the band. The crowd was awful.

They were pretty quiet, so I don't think it will be too frightening.

Looks like Caspian is done recording the new album. No release date yet, but I'm guessing November-ish.

They also replaced their drummer.
