It feels a bit like picking a convenient scapegoat but I do think some of this comes down to Brendan's influence. I think there's still plenty of good ideas apparent on the last few records but they rarely get the chance to find full fruition (at least not in the way that I'd like them to). When Brendan says things like (and I'm admittedly paraphrasing) that he sees his role as making the band's material as commercial as possible, it's hard not to think that his approach might not be best suited to bringing out the best in Pearl Jam.

I'd love to see them work with someone else next time around but I don't sense any enthusiasm for changing anything in that regard within the band. Whatever issues I might have with Brendan's work on the last two records, they seem very happy with it.

This is a song that asks me to look very deep inside myself and take stock of my loves and my fears, and it's hard to take that request seriously when it's delivered in calculated plastic.
These are magnificent points.

Well, I disagree that the song sounds calculated at all. But that's subjective (and as far as McP is concerned, colored by the need to justify a mind already made up long ago).

But perhaps you guys would/could get more out of the song if you stop looking at it as a song that "asks you to look very deep inside yourselves." It doesn't. This isn't a deep song at all. It's raw. These are surface, instinctual, uncalculated, heart-on-sleeve emotional sentiments. This is knee-jerk, gut stuff.

I do agree with Spenno, though. This song, as with all the songs on this album, are hindered by Mr. O'Brien. Which is so fucking weird since that guy is responsible for most of the band's best produced albums.

See, the production on "Lost in the dream" is fucking magical and makes these songs really come from and go to a different place. That music calls for it.

I dont think a song like Sirens really needs it and the music that PJ is writing these days isn't going to be better/worse (depending on your view) because of the production.

BOB just gets in the way of them really stretching their wings and creating something wonderful.

I think Sirens would have had more staying power if the band played it fewer times and at a higher quality live. It's a delicate flower, wrapped in calculated plastic, as florists generally will do. But the bouquet becomes less special when it is presented every night. Like being thrust into and out of a humid automobile glove compartment, and never refreshed, Sirens in the bore-chore PJ live set becomes at best indelicate and at worst a wilted mess once sweaty-swamp-ass-road-weary-wino Ed chokes back his reflux long enough to belch out the few unintelligible lyrics he didn't forget just prior to his mid-verse berating of his stage tech. That on top of a seemingly frequent loss of focus by the remaining band members sloppily and not deftly integrating and decoupling the backing musical components; and the observer is left feeling only the tingliness of their now-initiated bathroom break and not the tingliness of goosebumps raised on the back of their neck and arms at the wonder of a lovely bouquet of pussy willows.

Although many will argue that the live set performance shouldn't impact the value of the album performance; the general mediocrity of the live set performance leaves such a putrid odor that it becomes difficult not to associate the stench of the live slop with the album recording when it is played.

They should burn for Sirens, but not like the burning experienced during urination soon after the initiation of the song.

...

what ever happened to Ricky Ramone ?

Remember how confused most of us were by Sirens when it arrived? And then the video came out and we were... more confused. The video version was so much better and made most reevaluate. I know this is fact b/c I just googled "sirens video how harmless killed some time" and was led to September of 2013 (the good ol' days!). Quite the time capsule if you're terminally bored and/or want to chart how you've continued to devolve.

Whatever happened to harmless? I was on RM hiatus for a few months and totally missed all the drama. Can anyone sum it up in a sentence or so?
