This is what it comes down to.
A huge amount of people-- the "general audience"-- barely even think of him as an instrumentalist, just as a pop singer. I know I did for the longest time, and was blown away when I first saw him getting these sounds out of a guitar.

I think it feels opportunistic, as though it has more to do with people's unsatisfied desire to experience a kind of shared transcendent experience than anything connected to the musician themselves.

Yeah I would be with Speeno since even when artists I really like die I feel bad but I don't really feel any sense of loss except if I really think about Freddie Mercury I want to cry so I'm as bad as everyone else.
