Thursday April 3
Lucky-- missed this. woke up hung over.
Planta Madre-- ambitious argentine film with beautiful sound design and cinematography but severe script problems, really bad dialogue and terrible acting.
20000 Days on Earth-- breathtaking documentary about Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, songwriting, performance, and memory. absolutely beautiful.

Friday April 4
Kathleen Hanna: The Punk Singer-- really good, if a little too adoring. but you can't fault the tunes.
Mujeres Con Pelotas-- documentary on women's football (soccer) in argentina. sweet, clever, funny and kind of punk rock in its own way.
Tres D-- a story about people meeting at a film festival. on first impression, almost unbearable, but it won me over in the end. great cast.
Jay and Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie-- way too fucking stupid, but i'd be lying if i said i didn't laugh a couple times.

Saturday April 5
Afternoon Delight-- lovely film. incredibly sad and uncomfortably real at times. cast is fantastic.
The Image Revolution-- flimsy doc on an overhyped 90s phenomenon. felt like a DVD featurette. stupid.
Who Took Johnny-- missed this. work appointment.
Kumiko the Treasure Hunter-- an outstanding film, perhaps the Zellner brothers' best yet. really beautiful.
Dear Mr. Watterson-- missed this. got drunk.

Sunday April 6
Downloaded-- napster and download culture. it's been done. pretty good, but you could've reasonably expect better from Alex Winter
How to Disappear Completely-- weird. enjoyed it, though i'm still not quite sure just what i saw
Gente En Sitios-- some kind of cinema verite revivalist thing. interesting. tiresome. i dunno.
The Wait-- awful. worst film i saw in the festival.

Monday April 7
Submarine-- missed this. overslept.
Mistaken for Strangers-- outstanding. hilarious, touching, sad and brutally honest. loved loved loved this movie, even if i'm not the biggest fan of The National

Tuesday April 8
Un chateau en Italie-- sweet. a pleasant little film.
Algunas Chicas-- really gorgeous film on an aesthetic level but weird and kind of tedious at points.

Wednesday April 9
Buenos Aires Rap-- really great! i had no idea the rap scene in buenos aires was so active. very interesting from a sociological viewpoint as well.
Sarah prefere la course-- loved it. i was pulling for it to win the international competition. kind of disturbing in its own way

Thursday April 10
That's Sexploitation!-- missed this. diarrhea.

Friday April 11
Rohmer in Paris-- good. interesting. a little masturbatory. "does what it says on the tin".
The Muppets: Most Wanted-- truthfully? i loved it. still a bit mystified as to why it played on the festival (especially since it's opening here in a couple weeks) but we got a nice little intro tailor-made to the BAFICI festival, which was nice. i laughed really hard.
Fifi Howls from Happiness-- absolutely beautiful. this is the movie that ended up winning the international prize. well deserved. a doc about Bahman Mohasses, about art and destruction. really great.
Of Horses and Men-- so fucking odd. but great. kind of brutal at times. but really entertaining. a
Arctic Monkeys: Live at the Apollo-- missed this. surprise birthday party.

Saturday April 12
Tonight and the People-- reeeeeeally fucking pretentious, but this is an independent film festival. felt like an MTV feature from 1999.
Ice Poison-- straightforward but very powerful. really glad i saw this movie.
Ma maman est en Amérique, elle a rencontré Buffalo Bill-- really sweet. a kid's movie. loved it.
Burroughs: The Movie-- we've all seen this before, right? it was just fun to watch it on the big screen with an audience.

Sunday April 13
Stella Cadente-- missed this. hung over.
Only Lovers Left Alive-- really good. can't go wrong with that cast. it got a little namedroppy at points-- yeah, i get that they're vampires and have been around for centuries, but the whole "oh this reminds me of the quartet you wrote for Schubert" thing got kind of annoying quickly. really beautiful though.

All in all, I think the Nick Cave documentary, the National documentary, Kumiko the Treasure Hunter, Of Horses and Men, and Sarah Prefers to Run were my favorites of the festival.

There were a bunch of other movies, not listed, that I would've loved to see but couldn't make work because of my schedule. There were over 500 movies screened at the festival.

I just saw that Submarine, the Richard Ayoade movie I missed at the festival, is actually on Netflix. I'm halfway through it. It's fantastic.

i have seen the various trailers and some Moebius interviews from a while back, i think i've read a few articles about the documentary. i wonder if Pink floyd did in fact record some music for it - is it discussed in the movie?

Some movie with Keenan Ivory Wayans as an action hero. His line right after killing the bad guy is priceless: "Sometimes I plan shit." On TV it was changed to "stuff" but I'm not sure that is any less lame.

It was called Most Wanted, or something like that. It wasn't a spoof. Jon Voight is so over the top its almost a comedy, though.

Enemy. I liked Prisoners a lot more than this. Very weird ending.

I was all excited to go see this but it only played for a week here...
