He's only considered "right" in that the left has become too extreme and confused. Sam actually believes women shouldn't be forced into slavery. This should be the lefts view.

I admit I don't have a well thought out opinion on this, but is "right-winger" the right term here? Islamophobia/Anti-Muslim rhetoric is surely worse on the right, but not exclusive to it, right? To be clear, he has said some pretty crazy stuff about religion and especially Islam, but I don't really associated militant atheism with the right wing.

Yes, Harris criticizes all religions, but not all religions equally. As he puts it, if he were to burn the Qur'an on live TV, he would definitely need to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life, while The Book of Mormon play is celebrated by Mormons, and if he were to burn a Bible, odds are people would think he's an asshole but most likely wouldn't threaten his life. That's a problem and people are afraid to talk about it.

I admit I don't have a well thought out opinion on this, but is "right-winger" the right term here? Islamophobia/Anti-Muslim rhetoric is surely worse on the right, but not exclusive to it, right? I agree that it's messy, especially in the case of someone like Hitchens, though you could also argue that most people have relatively incoherent value systems (which is why I tend to think of ideology not as a set of interlocking propositional creeds but a contingent articulation of one's relationship to the world). But I think think insofar as Harris reads Islam (incorrectly) as a particularly and intrinsically irrational, violent, and hateful religious creed antithetic to liberal western values, he is setting himself up as the defender of a militant, dogmatic version of Enlightenment humanism (one which has been rightly critiqued as racist by a number of scholars) against cultural pluralism, and thus is on the right vis a vis not only Islam itself but a number of connected issues, i.e. immigration, national identity, etc. That he does so without considering the specific geopolitical history of the Middle East which might induce or incentivize violence and radicalism under the cover/auspices of any religious creed bears a structural similarity to how the right things about historic injustices (though I would be open to the argument that plenty of liberals view the subject as divorced from localized histories as well--for instance, Saba Mahmood is very clear on the limits of a liberal fetishization of "autonomy"). And perhaps more broadly, "militant atheism," if it is not now associated with the right wing (as I think it increasingly should be, distinguished from the broader category of atheism), should at least be noted as having resonances with contemporary right movements which seek to police the categories of citizenship and reduce, rather than extend, the full rights of humanity to large swaths of the population based on ethnic or religious identity. As SBWM noted above, in general the New Atheist movement curiously focused more on the danger posed by the swarthy, foreign other than domestic Christian terrorism, so I think that does tell you something about where their beliefs sit in a global left-right matrix.
