I would say the worst part of Solo´s performance in the box office are the reshoots.
The budget is fucking expensive...It was kinda impossible for this film to made that kind of money back.

But the other four Star Wars movies have made that kind of money back.

it could have justified its existence by being a good work of art...but, alas

I dont mean for this to come off as aggressive or anything else other than an honest question....

Can a movie just be a mindless escape for a couple hours without you needing to classify it as art? If a shitty movie is not an artistic expression (by your standards) is there still value in it existing?

I hope that makes sense. Curious though!

I never thought of this one as a possible box office smash. Not even close. And with Avengers?

I'm of the opinion that a movie should be self contained, or at least the movie series should be. I don't want to hear about how I should read the books or whatever. That's a filmmaking failure as far as I'm concerned.

Cool. I get that. And I don't disagree. But in the case of Maul, there is a reason for the criticisms people have brought up. And if you want to explore that, you have the option. If you don't, then don't. Who cares?

But I'm also not sure how many people out there who only watch the movies think, "Man, Darth Maul sure is cool. You know what the coolest thing about him is? He only has two lines! Boy, I sure hope he never speaks more than that."

I don't care what most people think. Silent killers have been a staple of "cool" menace for a long time. Of course suddenly talking a bunch would deflate that.

I just never thought of Maul as a silent killer..

This was a weird movie. Why did it have such a seemingly labored visual style that didn't match or enhance any of the narrative or thematic content? It almost struck me as McCabe & Mrs. Miller-esque: gray skies, white mountains, muddy browns, with a murky, almost faded look. Very weird, because the movie is not at all dark in tone or ambiguous in morality. Such an odd mix of elements.

This whole movie was pretty egregiously driven by fan service. Look, it's his blaster! Look, he's meeting Chewie! Look, it's the Falcon! Look, he's meeting Lando! Look, it's the Kessel run! Look, he's winning the Falcon fair and square! Look, we're referencing Bossk! Ugh. It's so grating and dumb. This barely even feels like a movie; it's just a stream of winks and jokes. The Marvelization of Star Wars is so depressing.

It also felt much faster and louder than any other SW movie. It never seems to stop moving, and the action is chaotic and relentless. It's exhausting. And it's not at all absorbing or atmospheric or interesting. The action is boooorrrrriiinnnnggggg. There is no passion for craftsmanship in this movie; that is DEATH in a blockbuster like this.

Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover were both laughable. Alden Ehrenreich's high-pitched voice was very distracting considering he's supposed to be a young Harrison Ford. Darth Maul was totally fucking ruined and I don't want to see what they were planning on doing with him in future movies (The LAST THING I want from Maul is for him to be fucking chatty. Ugh. The whole point was that he was a cool image whose mystery was enhanced by his icy silence. Now he just seems like a lame, milquetoast villain.). Igniting his lightsaber elicited a laugh and eye-roll from me. Soooooo dumbbbbb. Lando fucking SJWbot was also soooo dummmbbbb.

This movie was bad.

I pretty much agree with all of this. It’s a shame that Star Wars has dropped in quality.

Some comment on a YouTube video summed it up nicely, talking about the build up to Solo. I’m paraphrasing here, but it’s basically “People want us to lower our expectations for this movie, when in actuality we are lowering our standards.”
