enjoying both the earth and seefeel albums this morning

i had not heard of either before.

I hadn’t heard about them either.

Some great (and, in some cases, dramatically different) records from both bands still to come!

Candlebox's second album "Lucy" had some good moments.

This one did too. I had the album growing up and I almost had Candlebox as my first concert. My oldest brother was getting last minute tickets and I was hanging out with friends so he couldn’t find me and passed on it. I would go on to see Pearl Jam a year later as my first concert. I can’t say for sure, but I have a hunch telling people Pearl Jam was my first concert probably tops Candlebox.

Suede

…and we’re back! This first album back is a good start. As the amalgam of reviews concisely summarized on Wikipedia noted (I don’t always rely on Wikipedia but for some I am fully unfamiliar with it can help), this does have a bit of a retro Smiths-like feel - somewhat moody and a little distant, but it still has hooks that keep you engaged throughout the album. I liked So Young and Animal Nitrate off the bat, but I really sunk in much more on Pantomime Horse, The Drowners, Breakdown, Metal Mickey, and Animal Lover. That whole section of the album is really outstanding. Another great recommendation and a solid welcome back.

Slowdive - Souvlaki

This album sounded good to me, but didn’t live up to the hype. Alison, 40 Days, Souvlaki Space Station (probably the song that stuck out most beyond being largely instrumental), and When the Sun Hits were highlights for me, but only Souvlaki Space Station felt like a must. I guess some albums, as pretty sounding as it may be, just don’t connect the same. Even still though, this fell somewhere in the middle for me. It could also just be that the songs seemed to blend together after a while.

Who's better, candlebox or collective soul

Collective Soul. I liked their 2nd, 3rd and 4th albums a lot back at that time but I haven’t revisited them in decades.

In the 90s I had the Hints, Allegations… album, the self-titled album, and Dosage. I had no real memory of the first and third, but the second got some playing time.

Unwound - Fake Train

This album was sort of an up and down experience for me. Really I wasn’t into the vocals at all, but the band sounded really good. Were, Are and Was or Is was my top highlight here, really bringing a good noise to the album on an instrumental and it seemed to open up the album for me. Granted, I also liked Kantina, Honourosis, and Star Spangled Hell, so it wasn’t a bust for me - I just sort of wished they had a different singer.

Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton

From this one, I got some good Sonic Youth-like vibes, even if it is hyped as a shoegaze album. I mean, sure, there’s elements of that in the sort of grandiosity that hits in points, though its roughness around the edges keeps all that in check. I really liked the twists and turns within tracks in the first half, particularly Bell, Vigilant Always, and Pancake - though the second half is just as strong if more direct with Jeremy Parker, Park the Car By the Side of the Road, and Wrong Tube as immediate highlights. This was a strong one.

You've been digging the Polvo records, so I thought you might enjoy Unwound.

They're both kind of "post-Sonic Youth" bands, at least in my mind.

But I guess Unwound are bit more shouty.

Then again, you weren't nuts for Spiderland either, so who knows!

I will keep recommending a few more Unwound records, there's definitely progression in their songwriting throughout the 90s.
