Holy shit, Aftersun. Amazing movie, terribly beautiful. Paul Mescal, damn. I sat through a good chunk of the credits so I didn't have to walk out of the cinema still crying my eyes out. But then I've calmed down and as I'm walking out, a woman stops me to ask if she missed something and what the point of the movie was. It's not for everyone, I suppose

A masterpiece
Second-least funny Mel Brooks movie I've ever seen.

Just finished Ocean's 13 after 11 and 12 yesterday. They all work, in some ways. Very surface ways. 11 the best, 12 the least. But they work. But beneath the veneer there's nothing. It all feels so depressingly soulless to me in the end. I feel like a worse person for having watched them. It's like if Austin Powers tried to take itself more seriously and thought it were actually clever.

No. I think I was trying to figure Soderberg out, and had to finish all three to get a feeling for what he was actually trying to do. I guess he was trying to make something that visually captured the loose, cool, fun feel of the jazzy music in these movies. He succeeds in that, I guess. But I just don't see the point. I might just be the last person on earth who these are for.
But, you know, a movie like Catch Me If You Can is a similar vibe, but I can enjoy that, cause it has some kind of relatable heart to it. I guess I need the characters to feel more vulnerable; like they're in some kind of actual danger at some point.

Man, I don't know. I hear Out of Sight is good. But after these I'm going to take a long break from him.
I've seen Erin Brockovich, Contagion, and Traffic, none too impressed by any of those. But that was a while ago.

Gotcha.
Out of Sight is pretty awesome. And I think you'd actually like it. But I think you're right to take a break at this point. Give it some time. There are a lot of other directors to look at, y'know

Watching Wild At Heart now. After watching Mulholland Drive and The Elephant Man over the course of 2 days, this is such a huge step down. Although I do love it every time Sailor describes his snakeskin jacket.

You think?
A step, yes, but I'm not sure I'd call it a huge step. It's Lynch's Wizard of Oz and I find it equally endearing, bonkers, and terrifying.

There are some cool building blocks here, but halfway through it hasn't grabbed me. I can tell because I keep checking to see how much time is left.
