pearl jam has never been 'original' and other than vedder never really had a sound all their own. they are a distillation of a wide array of musical influences rather than their own voice (again, outside Eddie). That's one of the reasons why you get so many styles of songs from them, and people will find themselves enjoying songs that are related to genres and approaches they are otherwise not really interested in .

This is a good and comforting argument. I guess the first time I started to feel they were derivative now was Yield.

Yup. Sure, Pearl Jam were always somewhat derivative. But still they had an identity and still you could recognise a PJ song when you heard one. That may have been much to do with Ed but I don't know how much.

To be fair, every interview I've ever read with them includes this plus maybe a metaphor involving a wave or driving. They're all just awful at talking about thier music. And honestly interviews in general .

What websites good for old interviews? I'd love to read some binaural era stuff.

The riff sounds a lot cooler when it isn't nauseatingly polished and overproduced...

I remember Five Horizons having quite a bit.

It's unlikely to be as much of a problem as it was on Backspacer.

Yeah I don't think it's polished as much as it is kind of low in the mix.

I wouldn't describe it as polished or overproduced. Especially the "riff."

The drums sound more polished than the guitars. The snare has no punch whatsoever.

I'm pretty used to looking past the drums by now. And the first thought when I heard Severed Hand was everything should be louder, so that's nothing new either.

I'm not sure this is all that uncommon with rock bands. It seems like a relatively convenient shorthand, especially if you're not well versed in theory (which I'm not sure any of PJ are).

As for them being unique, I think they are (or were) relatively innovative, or at least interesting, in their songwriting and arrangements; they do some somewhat unexpected stuff for the genre in which they reside. I think one reason they're not seen as being all that unique is that they don't have that one signature musical sound that is consistent throughout their work. Take U2 and R.E.M.; even without Bono or Stipe's vocals, you can pick out the band from the Edge's delay effects in the former and Peter Buck's arpeggios in the latter. The music in PJ has never really had a single sound that was employed for all (or most) of their work.
