Are you talking solely about the hush money, or the conspiratorial steps he took to hide it because he wanted to be president?
Both. I bet more people who ran for president did both than didn't. Trump is such an idiot he couldn't get away with it.

I mean if you commit enough sketchy stuff in life it catches up to you. And I'm sure he'll be held accountable for the other pending cases, too. He's gonna be like a pinata after this.

Yes, and like Pennywise the Clown, when you stop paying attention to him he loses his power.

I've seen this idea several places now, but I'm not sure it's the same thing. Were those situations where "a government arrested the main opposition candidate" or that they prosecuted a corrupt ex-PM?
Seems like a fit:
Netanyahu submitted a request for immunity to the parliamentary speaker, Yuli Edelstein, on 1 January 2020.[27] Many MKs, including Avigdor Lieberman of Yisrael Beiteinu, Benny Gantz of Blue and White, and Stav Shaffir of the Green Party, were critical of the move. Lieberman called for the Knesset to bring back committees that had been dissolved (and also indicated that his party would vote against a bid for immunity); without a Knesset committee, there would be no action on Netanyahu's immunity until after the March election.[28] According to The Times of Israel columnist Raoul Wootliff, the election had in effect become a race to gain enough seats so that Netanyahu can successfully request immunity from over half of the MKs

Seems like a fit:
Lula attempted to run in the 2018 Brazilian presidential election but was disqualified under Brazil's Ficha Limpa law.[20] Before the annulment of his cases, he was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison, and after an unsuccessful appeal, Lula was arrested in April 2018 and spent 580 days in jail, until being released in November 2019, when the Supreme Federal Court ruled that his imprisonment was unlawful.[21][22][23][24] In March 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal judge presiding over the case, Sergio Moro, who served as Minister of Justice and Public Security in the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro,[25] was biased,[26] and all of the cases Moro had brought against Lula were annulled in June 2021. Following the court ruling, Lula was legally allowed to make another run for president in the 2022 elections, defeating Bolsonaro in the runoff.[27]

I think you left out the part where he was already serving a 12 year sentence, the part about a biased prosecution and judge does seem similar

The point still stands that we don't have to "imagine any other country" doing this, bi. It's happened. And in both cases I took the time to look up, the former candidate that was indicted is in power again... though I'd say one was likely targeted bc of his party and his opponent being in power only to be exonerated. And one is trying to stack the court to get his charges thrown out as we speak, hence the massive protests against him.
