Not to be a dick, but did you actually read the piece on The Wire? I read it yesterday, and it's not at all a "cancelling" piece.

First they came for the cop dramas, and because I was not a cop drama I said nothing...

Not directly, no, but it makes a moral judgement about continuing to watch it and implies it needs a "supplemental text" to understand.

I can't wait for the fresh 2022 lineup of shows when production eventually resumes. Who will put out the best Antifa drama? ABC or NBC?

It would truly be awful if people were encouraged to educate themselves beyond mass media representations.

The article didn't 'cancel' The Wire, it didn't say you were a bad person if you watched The Wire; it didn't even make the claim that The Wire is not a brilliant television show. All the article did was reassess a particular work of art with the passage of time and in the context of current events related to the show, and gauging how that changed their perspective. Which has been a part of criticism forever.

I don't think it's a particularly good piece or has anything awfully enlightening to say (although the point about how police brutality could be treated in serialized vs. episodic television was interesting). All I'm trying to say is that if a piece that innocuous sends you here:
But remember, these are just the fringe extremes and not what's next. Because the fringe never moves to the mainstream. Never. Then, by definition it wouldn't be fringe anymore, so that cannot happen.
Then I'd say you may need to read less criticism.

I'm still sorting out how I feel about this particular issue (cops on tv, etc). On the one hand, I can intellectually understand the complaint that it's gone too far and there should be a careful discussion about all that flat cancel culture implies and encompasses. (To be clear, I have not read what y'all are talking about re: The Wire so I'm commenting on that specifically, but rather the overall conversation)

However, on the other hand, I read that tweet about Brooklyn 99 and... it's not wrong. And I watch re-runs of Parks and Recreation where Louis CK plays a cop and it's really not funny to me anymore. Forget that it's Louis CK, watching a small town white cop bust a brown man for being in his own van presented as funny and harmless is difficult to watch.

There's nuance to all of this, of course. But I'm still working through where I land. And I'm not interested in shutting out the voices that make me uncomfortable. I have a good friend, who is an actor, who has said from now on he's committed to not playing a good cop. And I think I get that. And I support it.

Anyway, I've got no answers and no quick-wit replies. Just a lot to think about. And it's gonna take some time.

The world can make people reassess art, and see the flaws in art that they previously could not find, all of the time. It's not cancelling something and it's completely natural.

Why does art have to make you feel good?

It doesn't. I don't think that's what most people are saying.
