Yeah. They certainly had plenty of popularity, but I don't often hear them discussed in the pantheon of great rock bands.

No, I think doug and trag are right. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone call them underrated or mention the idea that they aren't among one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Maybe that STILL makes them underrated somehow, especially if you feel like what you've seen isn't enough. But I think it's an age gap thing. Which doesn't disprove your point, just means that if it's true it's a fairly new development.
Kinda like when one day everyone just decided Revolver was the Beatles' best record. And everyone simultaneously agreed and acted like it had always been a known and accepted fact. Most of my life all I heard anyone talk about was Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road. So, to me, the love for Revolver came out of nowhere.

I had a whole paragraph about how bad that song is but deleted it.
That type of success is bad for a band, I think. The same thing happened to Sugar Ray and Smashmouth: After their one hit wonder, they made entire albums like that song.
