BurtReynolds wrote:I dont know why people say it's less safe than Marvel or takes risks. It's pretty standard dark and gritty garbage.
I don't think you have to like the thing to note that it takes some big swings thematically, in its grand operatic tone, in the way it's shot, the way it's plotted. Everything about it feels much more baroque, bloated, reaching for that greatness than most comparatively streamlined, plain, muted superhero films of the era. Whether they're successful in achieving it is another thing, but we're talking about ambitions, not execution. I also think an argument could be made that in a pop culture landscape where lightheartedness and straightforwardness was the market norm, embracing "dark and gritty" is a risk in itself.

Like I said I think this movie has a lot of problems but I admire a lot about it

It's certainly grandiose to the point of pretentious. I'm not sure I'd call that ambitious. Bloated fits.

To me, tonally it didn't do anything new or interesting. At best it seemed like a rehash what came before Marvel (and Marvel was interesting because it initially did offer a refreshing alternative).

What in particular are you referencing with before Marvel?

The only two moments in this movie that has any redeeming qualities was the opening credits montage (Snyder can really nail those for some reason), and the fight scene with Batman and some random goons (which felt like it was shot by someone else or like it was from another movie entirely).

Every single other thing failed.

The overall tone, willingness to embrace color and light, and the more fantastic comic book elements, etc.

I don't want to oversell that too much, Spider-Man did a lot of that, too , but it was mostly black leather and darkly lit alleys and 90s music before that.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Color and light? This movie is full of color and light. What are you talking about? Much more vibrancy and a much wider dynamic range in this movie than in most MCU things. Larry Fong gets some really gorgeous, vivid shots here. I think that critique applies much more to both Man of Steel and the Snyder cut of JL

When I said light I just meant they were brightly lit. They take place in daylight. Not that they were beautiful images. They are basically tv shows. I don't want to give anyone the impression that I'm defending marvel here!

I find a lot of BvS to look really ugly, and I usually like Snyder's style.

I don't want to fight about this. Let's not fight over this stupid hideous movie. Let's agree that anders shouldn't have bumped this thread.
