Re: Election 2020
I say this a lot, but the mainstream news media, in some cases including FOX, are not completely interested in issues and taking sides. They are interested in ratings. The only way ratings stay strong is if the race is close, and the only way they can control for that is to manage the horse race. The media calls it vetting but most of the stuff they spew is decades old stuff they could have reported in ages ago.
Biden is the presumptive nominee? The media digs up everything it can to make the race interesting.
Warren is hot in the polls over the summer? The media digs in and makes a mountain out of the Medicare for All stuff that at that point didn’t need to be fully spelled out.
Bernie wins the popular vote in the first 3 primary/caucus states, they fill the void with this Castro stuff to demonize him.
It’s a vicious cycle, the likes of which the last time played right into Trump’s hands (be it the need to bring down Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, even Ted Cruz...or working those emails forever because the race wouldn’t have ever been close).
Forget Russia, you want to hold anyone accountable, it’s the media for timing their coverages time keep races close to improve their ratings. Otherwise, why wait until this week to talk about this Castro thing that is decades old- especially since he ran in 2016 and didn’t bow out until the very end.
Edit: this is coming from someone who is not a Bernie supporter per se, but the pattern is obvious and disturbing.
Also, nothing makes them happier than having Bloomberg in the race - a foil to Bernie they can build up then chew to pieces and put back together again practically in the same news cycle. Ratings central!

Re: Election 2020
I'm 100% fine with them paying more in taxes. However, I'm extremely skeptical of the efficacy of any wealth tax on the super rich. My post was intended to illustrate the relatively limited impact of a 100% marginal wealth tax on all wealth greater than $1 billion even if you assume away the liquidity issues, incentive effects, tax avoidance, and inevitable exceptions that would be created the best case scenario still isn't that great.McParadigm wrote:Billionaires are just an extreme subsect of the top 1%, which combined own 40% of the nation’s wealth. Also, saying that the 540 billionaires in this country have enough combined wealth to run the entire United States federal apparatus for half a year seems like a really great argument in favor of them paying more taxes.
Obviously a 100% wealth tax isn't being proposed, except by the bros who prefer murder of course, but I think the European experience with wealth taxes suggest that it doesn't do a particularly good job raising revenue and reduce economic inequality.

No. You’re wrong. It’s been documented that Trump doesn’t pay his bills.verb_to_trust wrote:No. You're wrong. Re: Election 2020
It’ll be interesting to see how Bernie handles the hot seat. This debate, in this news cycle, is closer to an ‘open season’-style national general election situation than he’s ever been in.

What does she have to offer at this point but attacks on Bloomberg?tragabigzanda wrote:Pretty tall order for Warren tonight: build on the success of last week’s feistiness without going overboard; appeal to the far left voters who are jumping on the Bernie boat, as well as to the Bloomberg/Klobuchar fans who view Bernie as an existential threat. Funny, but the people who dying from inadequate medical coverage, the people drowning in debt, immigrants who dream of their family being allowed to cross a line in the dirt, young people engaged in politics for the first... the groups Bernie is victimizing with his lies... they may not be laughing when reality comes crashing down on them.bart wrote:Early contender for Bernie 2024 re-election campaign slogan96583UP wrote:Yes I didn't say it was realistic

Bernie: Free healthcare and education are among the reasons that the Cuban people didn’t rise up and overthrow Castro’s oppressive government after his 1959 revolution.tragabigzanda wrote:Not sympathizing with Castro, for startersBi_3 wrote:What does she have to offer at this point but attacks on Bloomberg?tragabigzanda wrote:Pretty tall order for Warren tonight: build on the success of last week’s feistiness without going overboard; appeal to the far left voters who are jumping on the Bernie boat, as well as to the Bloomberg/Klobuchar fans who view Bernie as an existential threat.
