Doesn't seem like too many stores are carrying each variant.

Not at all. Like 2-3 max per variant. Sometimes just 1. They’re all available online though, I haven’t seen any (yet) where a shop is holding them specifically for in person.

all utterly inessential to general fandom and designed to appeal to a niche market that enjoys them. I mean I think one variant is too many, but I'm not a collector, and happily, like t-shirts and basketballs, all of this can be easily ignored by me
IF THE BOARD WOULD STOP FUCKING BITCHING ABOUT THEM CONSTANTLY

if a meaningful amount of the profits are going to local, independent, otherwise economically-fragile records stores, then this makes much more sense / I get it

Email from record label to pre-ordered customers: “Due to unforeseen circumstances with production, the new Waxahatchee album has been pushed back from April to June 1. We will email you when your order ships.”
and now we understand why so many fan club singles got delayed in years past

I think it’s more about them earning from the attention, not extra money from the sales themself.

The most notable case of this was the Adele 30 pressing just absolutely fucking up production schedules by jumping ahead of schedule, and sending a pretty long-lasting ripple effect across the industry. And 6 months later, stores and sites couldn’t get rid of their stock and that thing could readily be found for like $10.

Remember during Backspacer, they'd post a picture of the limited edition 7", and you had to run to the store immediately to get it?
