What movies are you watching?

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

The Fabelmans has two of the best scenes you'll find in a movie. Sadly, they're contained within two and a half hours of underwritten, over-acted, kind of annoying Spielberg-ania. I'm not a Spielberg partisan, so this didn't quite land for me. It's not terrible, it's just not my cup of tea. The two great scenes, for those of you who've seen it, are the two extended cameos. Uncle Boris in the bedroom (heartbreaking) and you goddamn well know who. Especially that second one, holy cow

I think I liked it more than you did (less than Jorge did) but I don't disagree with anything you said here. I could quibble with degrees, probably, but why? As I said before, it's a lovely movie but it's also sort of hollow. Worth seeing but I wanted more from it.

I didn't watch Lincoln so I can't speak on it. Ready Player One was dogshit save for that one wild, thrilling race scene near the start which was worth the price of admission alone. Generally I feel like the "sentimentality" critique of his work is facile and tired, it's such a cliche that it's become more of a lens through which people view his work than what's in the work itself. The Fabelmans is a melancholic, regretful, and deeply personal examination of his youth more than anything resembling the chintzy sentiment he gets accused of

I agree. And I actually wanted MORE Of the chintzy sentiment he gets accused of. That was my main problem with the movie. I felt it lacked sentiment. It was so sober and cold. I just wanted a bit more magic. There are several scenes that get there (or almost get there).

Though, to totally contradict myself, I did love how the parents where handled with grace and a lack of agenda (and overt sentimentality). In spaces where he could have been heavy-handed or cliche, he never is where they are concerned. I with Dano's performance had been stronger, though.
