The Argonaut wrote:I think I feel very similarly about Tár. It has some things going for it, but some odd details distract. A question about the ending:
Spoiler: show
Is she happy, even conducting where she was? She has this revelation near the end of the movie when she watches the tapes she used to watch when she was a kid. Her art had moved so far from joy and beauty to just careerism and technical bologna and snobbishness and personal privilege and everything else. She spends most of the movie composing an uninspired song based on a doorbell. Now that she's back in touch with what she loves about her art, is she happy to be doing what she's doing?

She is, right? She's taking it as seriously as she ever did, preparing notes, rehearsing with the musicians. She is physically repulsed when the opportunity to take advantage of a woman is presented to her, in the massage parlor.

So, yeah, I think the ending is funny. But we're not just laughing at Tár, there. It's also celebrating her. She knows something about herself and her art and what's really important and is just going for it whatever and wherever she has to.
Spoiler: show
Yeah I agree that she is taking it seriously and still engaged with it. Her life changed a lot but she seems to roll with it. The massage girl part I’m not sure what to say bout it

I’ve only seen bits of it. My wife and I made a list of movies we’ve never seen and put them in a random generator, and Boogie Nights came up first. Started late last night, but she fell asleep, so we’re finishing this morning.

They finished in the movie quite a bit as well.

You’re a big star, lenny.

In 2022, I watched 288 feature-length movies that I'd never seen before. Oddly enough, that is the exact same number of movies I watched in 2021. 288. What are the odds?

At the end of every month, I also tabulated where I watched each movie. humor me:

Criterion Channel (streaming service): 123
Downloaded (totally legally): 54
at the Cinema: 48
Netflix: 29
Hulu: 18
Metrograph (streaming service): 5
YouTube: 4
Turner Classic Movies (cable channel): 3
on an Airplane: 2
Peacock: 1
Roku Channel: 1

That's literally zero movies on Blu-ray or DVD or whatever else. Kind of strange to contemplate. And 48 movies in the theatre, plus times I went back to the cinema to re-watch something (I saw Top Gun Maverick six times, for example), means I went to the cinema more than once a week on average.

I can’t imagine seeing anything more than two or three times in the theater. You’re a wild man.

Top Gun is the first time I've ever done anything like that. Part of it was just that there wasn't much in the cinema this summer

I saw Fight Club 4.5 times in the theater. That's the most for me. Very impressive, Argo.

Argo, did you notice something different with each viewing?

Yeah there wasn’t much. We used to have a dollar theater that would show movies 3 or 4 months after the regular theaters, so I would watch some things twice then.

I saw half , and I was sooo bored I can’t finish it. Adam Driver is horribly miscast and has a very very distracting wig.

Is this worth watching? I like Driver, but it has been receiving middling reviews.

That was an interesting movie. The beginning was really strong, but it did lose me a bit towards the emd.
