Oh damn you got me. I don't know how I'll ever recover from this.

I understand this feeling. The logical arguments for why award shows are trite make so much sense, but when something I like wins an award, I think it’s cool.

Exactly.
Add to that childhood dreams and years of study and craft and any celebration of the art form really gets me.

It's less that they're "trite" and more that they're deeply corrupt and fundamentally, philosophically anti-art.
But I'm a hypocrite about this because the moment a movie or filmmaker I like gets one of these I'm like "hell yeah".
I really think award shows and the commodification of culture into a competitive spectacle are damaging to how we think of and discuss art. But I also have 30+ years of indoctrination in my head so I do get starry-eyed about them from time to time

Jorge is right.
It’s the best thing in the world if you win. But it doesn’t matter at all if you don’t. In fact it’s often better.
It means nothing ultimately but it’s all about how you react to it and play the after.
And that’s true but different if you’re an actor or sound engineer or effects or costume or band etc
It doesn’t mean anything to us out here. But even getting the nod is huge. Something you’ll have on your cv forever.
All depends what you do next

Once I realized these award shows are less about art and more like an industry event where employees are rewarded for good work for the company, they become a lot easier to not care about one way or another.

Oscar Wars is a fascinating book that goes into the history of this, though it's sometimes painted more as a bunch of amusing anecdotes than the crass, ghoulish auction for status and prestige it actually is

This is great. Cillian Murphy’s first role ever was in a play that became a film called Disco Pigs. (Probably my favourite Irish movie ever)
Here’s rehearsal footage from it. He’s fuckin intense all the way back then

A couple of years ago someone posted the live feed of the Grammy's (or one of those) and I was struck by how mundane it all was during the commercial breaks. It was just a bunch of sweaty people in a glorified warehouse attending a trade show. Of course, I always knew that's what it was, but the spell gets broken when they do that stuff.
I generally get that feeling when I meet a celebrity in real life. I don't want to see William shatner in real life. He's a starship captain!
