Seems almost as necessary as the second season of Big Little Lies.durdencommatyler wrote:Same. Never saw it. Heard nothing. Totally. I think that's why I haven't made any real effort to see it.Monkey_Driven wrote:Seems almost as necessary as the second season of Big Little Lies.durdencommatyler wrote:Same. Never saw it. Old Records Never Die
High Fidelity meets Killing Yourself to Live when one man searches for his lost record collection.
As he finds himself within spitting distance of middle-age, journalist Eric Spitznagel feels acutely the loss of… something. Freedom? Maybe. Coolness? Could be. The records he sold in a financial pinch? Definitely. To find out for sure, he sets out on a quest to find the original vinyl artifacts from his past. Not just copies. The exact same records: The Bon Jovi record with his first girlfriend's phone number scrawled on the front sleeve. The KISS Alive II he once shared with his little brother. The Replacements Let It Be he’s pretty sure, 20 years later, would still smell like weed.
As he embarks on his hero's journey, he reminisces about the actual records, the music, and the people he listened to it with—old girlfriends, his high school pals, and, most poignantly, his father and his young son. He explores the magic of music and memory as he interweaves his adventures in record-culture with questions about our connection to our past, the possibility of ever recapturing it, and whether we would want to if we could.

I got a few episodes into The Fall but got too busy to finish it and I've never heard of the other. I should check the library and see if they have them on DVD.durdencommatyler wrote:Nussbaum's essay on True Detective (S1) is spot on. Both are exquisite and complex and difficult to watch in the most rewarding way.bune wrote:I got a few episodes into The Fall but got too busy to finish it and I've never heard of the other. They have three series of The Fall...don't they ever catch the guy?
And they have the first season of the other. I put everything on hold, should have them all by the weekend.

The Fall is one complete narrative stretched over 3 seasons. The whole thing has a definite satisfying (in my opinion) ending. I'll leave it at that.
As we were just discussing, I haven't seen S2 of Top of the Lake but I feel like the first season is so good and complete that I don't really need a second season. S1 is totally self-contained and wonderful on its own.

Re: What are you currently reading?
it was more of a joke about series extending their stories, but delivered poorly.

Found this in one of those little free library boxes while on a bike ride yesterday. Kim's a great writer.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Re: What are you currently reading?
Somehow I missed all of that, and will do.
So far my big thought on the book is that I really get this sentence, and I hope to read more and more like it:
I can still smell the barest trace of gas from the old 1950s stove, an invisible odor mixed with sunshine streaming in from the windows, and, somewhere, eucalyptus bathed in the haze of ambition.

Re: What are you currently reading?
I was about two chapters in to the Tweedy memoir I bought when this Kim memoir kind of fell in my lap. It's strange hearing such different voices jump from the pages, and I can't really do both at the same time. I think Kim is going to win out and Tweedy is going to have to wait for a bit.

Re: What are you currently reading?
The Toni Morrison hot takes I'm finding on Facebook (from people who definitely have read Beloved) are something else:
sorry you don’t like facts. Killing your child for personal protection is the epitome of being a coward. A strong person would give their life for their child not kill their child so they can be safe
no she is the pussy and you are being killing your own child to keep yourself safe is a sign of cowardice and selfishness
you know only animals kill their own children ?
