So why did he put an older Anakin there to begin with? GL knew the story at the time, and understood Anakin wasn't 55 when he turned to the dark side.

at the time the only anakin we ever saw was the middle aged guy in the vadar costume. I don't know that an audience would have made the younger anakin connection.
I think it should be the older guy since he died redeemed, but I get why lucas did it, and that one's not unreasonable.

Fans wouldn't understand who the younger Anakin was, and neither would Luke. It was stupid. Why would he appear to Luke as someone Luke doesn't know?

The unforgivable sins of the movie changes IMHO are (in order):
- Greedo shooting first
- Jabba the Hutt at the Millenium Falcon
- the NOOOOOOOOO as Vader kills the Emperor
- The dance scene in ROTJ
- Changing Boba Fett's voice
- Anakin at the end of ROTJ
And for the record, there are many, MANY sins. These are just the ones that make me angry.

My top 5 would be:
1. Han/Greedo (I know this has been done to death, but it's still emblematic of the way the minor changes changed the way you read the characters)
2. "Jedi Rocks" - ROTJ already has a bunch of problems, but this fucking thing goes on forever.
3. Luke screaming "Noooooo!" as he falls off the gantry in Cloud City - Again, completely changes the way we read the character at the moment. Ugh. Luckily, this is the only thing from Empire on my list.
4. The mouth on the Sarlaac - Others have written/talked about this more elegantly, but making the Sarlaac more "creature like" takes away from the whole body horror of a giant vagina in the desert.
5. Jabba in Star Wars - Basically because the scene does nothing--it just repeats information from the Greedo scene.
Honorable Mentions - Replacing Yoda with CGI in The Phantom Menace (but those movies were fucking awful from start to finish, so this barely counts), replacing the ape face Emperor in Empire, making Mos Eisley "busier," Hayden Christiansen

I don't recall the boba fett's voice thing.
The added scene with Luke and his friends in the hanger is a little grating, too.
Generally extra scenes were bad ideas. But I usually enjoyed when they added more ships, etc. to the space battles--especially in new hope.

I don't think I knew about or noticed Luke screaming noooo as he fell. I'd have to add that to my list.
EDIT: I don't know ... that's not as "in your face" as the other stuff. It's bad, but I won't call it unforgivable.
