Sup biyatches long time since I posted here. I found some interesting Andrew Watt youtube videos from when he was much younger. Below are him doing covers of our PJ guys as well as Prince and Kanye. He also has his own original songs as well. I think rock is in such a down swing that guys like these that make the effort just get overlooked and can't get a career going in a traditional rock setting so they migrate to poppier territories.

Looking at these videos, he takes his own spins on these songs and can shred like a mofo. I guess talent finally finds it's way. At his age and knowledge of different genres, he could be good for the PJ guys. I'm officially interested in this guy.

If this album had been awful, "Echo Victor" could've replaced PRAMG as our go-to "Pearl Jam is bad now" meme.

maybe the best thing about this album is how eddie mostly parks himself of the sweet spot of his current range and stays there - where he can hit those magnificent sustained notes that just envelope you and make it all ok

It is a perfectly executed song.

It is also a song Pearl Jam and BoB could have messed up alot. Swallow Hole feels like it could have evolved into this.

Sorry, mental-banked this to respond to yesterday, but got so excited by March Madness that I forgot! There are a few things I really like about it. The first is how it combines a few really disparate musical elements in a way that seems garish and wrong but also hilarious -- right off there is the really crunchy, industrial-sounding guitar riff, which (like Ms. H. pointed out) has some distinct NIN flavors, but design-wise kind of reminds me of "I'm Free" by the Who. Then there's this completely off-script, almost barroom-style piano accompaniment, that feels like intentional comic relief -- like the plinky one-note accompaniment Boom plays during "Rockin' In the Free World," but dumped into an even less appropriate context, and like everything else on this album that rides the line between aesthetic obliviousness and completely self-aware cheese, it's all the better for it. The verse vocals feel biting and fierce, and then it shifts to the "chorus" part (insofar as you can call it that), and it seems to become more sensitive -- a juxtaposition I really like. Then in the second verse, a lot of the high end comes off, and you get this bassy-dancey version of the riff that really feels like a NIN tune. That's a lot of aesthetic and emotional ground in a short time, an attention to dynamic detail that a less pop-minded producer might miss in a song like this.

Then, like I said, I really just like the way Eddie sings it. There are a lot of single melodic variations that only appear one place in the song ("she was the only light," "hands up in the air"), and it follows a melodic structure that isn't linear within the scope of any single part -- you have to listen to both verses, for example, to pick up on where the recurring motifs are, because in any given verse, there isn't a lot of musical repetition. And the way he ends each verse with that "hypnotize bloodshot eyes" passage just feels really sharp to me -- it adds some tempo and syncopation to a musical framework that is otherwise kind of piecemeal and fragmented. I dunno, the song feels like it was kind of built out one line at a time, and I like that about it -- it's like every time I'm listening, I'm discovering it as I go. It feels weird that this album keeps coming back around to Van Morrison comparisons but that's a lot of what I like about his work as well.

I just realised, another reason Fallout Today reminds me off Riot Act is the lyrics' poetic-philosophical-self-help approach that reminds me of LBC or I Am Mine or... most of Riot Act actually; Ed seemed to really want to find another way of doing life at the time, and he channels that in Riot Act by dishing out these lovely fragments of battle-worn wisdom, just as he does here

I can see that - those themes become much more prominent on the post riot act records, but there is an autumal warmth to fallout today that connects it to those songs
