There was a similar incident where the guy was passed out in the drivethrough, but he also had a gun visible. It did not end well for him either.

Something like that happened in my area and they called in SWAT and an armored car. 2 hours later they woke the people in the car with a flashbang and no one got shot.

Maybe having armored cars can sometimes be useful if it means the cops feel safe not shooting immediately?
But they didn't shoot him immediately. They shot him after he stole their taser and pointed it at them.
At least the mayor thinks this is not a justification for executing him.
“While there may be debate as to whether this was an appropriate use of deadly force, I firmly believe that there is a clear distinction between what you can do and what you should do,” Ms. Bottoms said. “I do not believe that this was a justified use of deadly force.”

Why do the police get to treat tasers as less than lethal, but having a tasers pointed at them justifies the use of deadly force?

So what is the run-down of proposals? serious question. want to consider tangible goals / next steps and not just be consumed by complaining.

Someone break the options down:

1) Police Immunity: is this real, is this the problem. they don't second guess killing because they can't be prosecuted (when). Eliminate this

2) Community Policing: Softer-touch, de-militarized 'policing'. get to know the community. more there to help than there to hurt. Implement this

3) Eliminate police unions: but i thought leftists loved unions. but they also contain MSG, which is bad.

4) Eliminate Policing: That way everyone can watch their elderly parents get gang-raped every day by trolling packs of thugs like it's the soviet liberation of poland. This seems extreme but the sacrifice might be worth it.

5) ???????

Because they have a lethal weapon sidestrapped to them in the event they are incapacitated by a taser? You can try and turn this into a counterfeit 20, but it won't hold water.

I'm sure she'd prefer police precincts don't get burned to the ground over the course of the next week.

I have a foolproof plan that will eliminate entirely the risk that an unarmed civilian will be able to take a lethal weapon away from any policeman.

Would it end in cops getting the shit beat out of them like you did?

I was contrasting the police response in two incidents involving passed out individuals armed with firearms in their vehicles, and the variable of additional backup/ armored car availability.

This situation was a bit different beyond the firearm aspect because they actually got him out of the vehicle.

We are missing images of what the guy was doing when he was shot, but legally these cops are probably in the clear if he actually pointed the taser at them. Ideally, they would have maintained a safe distance and followed him waiting for backup, but I don't know how you can make that the legal standard rather than department policy/ best practices.

A duty to retreat is problematic for private citizens. It would make policing entirely untenable.

Why would the cops not have a duty to not murder someone holding a non-lethal weapon. This is obviously different from him having a gun.

I am actually down to defund the police. think it's a good idea. we don't need cops anymore. they should be more like social workers.
