You know who doesn't get enough acknowledgement for their role in influencing Nu Metal? Helmet. Everyone points to RATM and Faith No More, but I think Helmet should be in that group as well. They may not have had the hip-hop element, but they had the deep low-end and the heavy riffs, and they didn't have the usual "metal" image or posturing. Page's vocals were aggressive but workmanlike; he sounded like a dude, not a virtuoso. The songs had accessible hooks and (often) catchy choruses. They were heavier than rock but easier to "get" than metal (even though their musicianship was actually super impressive and their composition was deceptively technical). I think you can hear their echoes in a lot of Nu material - Deftones especially (who aren't shy about acknowledging as much).

Anyway. Just thinking out loud.

Oh, and thank you to whomever finally broke the Brackish/Numb tie.

Helmet is absolutely a band that inspired nu metal, there's a lot of early Deftones and Chevelle that reminds me of Helmet a lot. White Zombie is also a band I think had a lot of influence for nu metal.

I've heard it. You could just tack it on to the end of round one. Maybe add something else.
