Based on the quick spread of the coronavirus on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, it’s likely the coronavirus spreads similarly to the norovirus, which is through the fecal-oral route and through contaminated objects called fomites that eventually contaminate our food and water.

Northern Italy Has 51 Coronavirus Cases (8:42 a.m. NY)

The Lombardy region has 39 coronavirus cases with another 12 cases in the Veneto, regional officials said in a press conference Saturday in Milan. Most of the cases are in the Codogno area, 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Milan. A woman who was found dead in her home subsequently tested positive, the health secretary said. Earlier, three tourists in Rome were diagnosed with the virus.

I have a hunch this is largely based on their food & hospitality practices, which are both very raw (in the literal sense) and rustic.

i think some business person who was in or was near someone who went to asia visited there and didn't know they had it and now they all have it

the WHO had modeled a 1 person -> infects 2.5 people model so this could now be the 2nd derivative effect we are seeing

Health officials said they are still looking for the person who passed the virus to the 38-year-old. They suspect a friend of his who returned to Italy from China in late January, but didn’t show symptoms or get sick, according to Italian press reports.
