What I don’t get about PJ anymore is how simplistic and sloppy the playing and chord structure has gotten. Have a look at those first few albums, the chords Stone used added so much colour and were complex to write a melody over. Now it’s sloppy faux punk and sounds lazy

What happened is they got old and any attempts to re-capture the old sound would be and has been pretty bad. Sure, they could be the Foo Fighters and make the exact same record for 25 straight years but I'm sure that would be shit upon too. I'm not trying to be an apologist, their last two albums have been uninspired, at best, but DotC and this song at least sound different and interesting to my ears.

I will completely agree that the classic PJ "sound" was born from Stone's rhythm guitar riffs...and those have been missing for the most part. The band is absolutely at it's best when they make a crunchy, loud, groove based rock song.

Yeah, I have to agree here. It's annoying because the presence of the drums is fucking great. The room reverberation is too notch.

It's a shame they didn't give the same treatment to the guitars, barring the solo.

What's interesting is the use of the stereo space, i.e. binaural effects. The solo is all over to the left channel. The bridge through the 3 minute mark has the vocals spread quite wide. The preview track sounded shit because it was released in mono.

I seem to like this a lot more than everyone here. Jeff and Matt grooving again. Jeff's bass tone is badass. And the various sections give it a much better structure than the straight ahead rock feel indicated from the opening chords. Vocal melody is strong - the sloppy bah da da bit is clearly intentional. Mike's solo is panned a bit far left for me but it is looser and more like him than some of the solos on Lightning Bolt which sounded like he'd played it 50 times until Brendan was happy. This sounds like a second take which I prefer.

I just hope all the songs don't start with Matt drumming by himself. Was waiting for My Sharona to start.

Don't think I agree with all these songs, but it does remind me of a song or songs. Have to think about which, might have to listen to them again to compare.

I like lost dogs type songs with a ragged guitar sound so I'm ok with this song in general
The jarring structure keeps it interesting
