honestly, this is the first page in this thread that i've read in awhile. i assume with the exception of maybe 3-4 people (pete being among them), everyone here thinks this is a pretty good song.
i fucking love it.
one of the things that i love about the war on drugs is that i can drive a highway late at night during the summer and just lose myself in their music. this is one of those songs. that's really the only way i can explain it.

Major epiphany that's been on the tip of my brain the past few days: from, like, 4:08 to the end, my subconscious has been hearing the "It's OK" tag.
It's slowed down, but it's there.

Don't say that, you'll ruin the song for me.

The 9/4/2000 tag might be my holy grail of Pearl Jam moments, and I think that's what I've been "feeling" from "Held by these thoughts..." to the end of the song.

Uh oh. I doubled down with specifics.

Don't worry, surely the Springsteen comparisons would have produced the same result eventually.

The reason the Trump reference works for me is the "He's best day's gone..." part. There is a bit of empathy and a lot of pity that makes the first reference ("Sitting Bullshit") bigger than just a cheap shot.

I didn't need the sympathy with Trump to help "sitting bullshit" land, but whatever

Spitballing what would be my top 15-20 since 2000 and I can see this and a handful of Gigaton songs making the cut.

Love this song and more specifically, where it sits within the track listing. It’s timing is perfect.
I hear a couple of influences - Springsteen and Petty on the verses and oddly enough...Duran Duran on the chorus.
As soon as I heard this one, Ordinary World (D/D) came immediately to mind. There’s something very late 80s sounding about it.
