If you call simply pointing out the length of my wife's hair "making fun of", then yeah, I'll show you a picture and have at it
is she "balding"?
some hairloss since giving birth. it happens to the best of us. Still hot though
so nothing like having alopecia. i need something else that you are ok with us making fun of your wife about, this won't cut it.
You pushing this at tree and trying to upset him about his wife is far more aggressive than rocks dumb joke.
i'm just trying to understand what he thinks is and isn't ok to say about someone's wife
It's probably never a good idea to insult anyone. But these stupid gazillionaire celebs have it coming, especially with all their hypocritical platitudes and everything. You wouldn't have even batted an eye if not for the SMACK. Remember Ricky Gervais? Nobody smacked him. But seriously, this was the least insulting insults of all time.

What if Chris Rock posted a picture of a kid on a ventilator, without the spoiler tag?
Weak analogy for obvious reasons.
Look, my sphere of influence in this world is 30” tall and doesn’t even know how to tie her own shoelaces yet. My view is that people’s need to project their sense of justice onto a couple celebrities they’ll never meet is a bigger symptom of our collective sickness than whatever happened at the Oscars last night. It made for entertaining clickbait while I was brushing my teeth I guess.
I am not making an analogy I am making fun of you.
You should have slapped him.
It wouldn't be worth it, think of the interminable PMs I'd get in the aftermath.

Bullshit. The joke wasn’t about her having alopecia. It was about her look at that moment. Lots of African American women are bald and/or wear wigs. She chose that look. And that joke was innocuous.
Will Smith has over reacted and clearly has issues.
"chose" that look? shut the fuck up; she has Alopecia and has cut it short to save herself no end of shame if she existed as herself in public with random baldness caused by anxiety and stress
my partner has Alopecia and I would have done exactly the same fucking thing
Physical violence over words? Toxic.
Change your name to Harmful.

I'd love to see the Venne diagram between groups calling Will Smith "violent" and "uncivil", and groups advocating for slapping their kids on the wrist when they step out of line

It's not like Rock said he hates bald people. He said "your hair right now looks like the hot girl from that one movie". LOL

the joke communicated something deeply hurtful; he got a smack for it; I don't care what secret feelings he has in his heart for chronically ill (not just bald) people; if he respects them, that should be written into his shitty routines

This is the same territory as that racism thread we were on about. He's not necessarily communicating what you're picking up. No offense, but your radar for painful insults is entirely out of whack, hate to break it to you. Sometimes a dumb joke is just a dumb joke. You know, for laughs?

Will Smith is a "serious actor" who tries to win awards and get paid eight figures a movie. He's married to Jada, whose movie career has dried up. You can say that's a Hollywood bias against middle aged women or women of color, but also it's maybe just because she isn't that compelling of an actor. At least not enough to sustain a multi-decade career. Not everyone gets to stay in the big leagues forever.
So Jada's at a point in her career where if she wants to stay in the public eye, the avenue left to her is daytime television personality. That means airing your dirty laundry in public and being involved in drama. She needs that for her career. Will Smith doesn't need that for his career. But he somehow let her drag him into all that, airing their dirty laundry in public and letting people in way more than he ever should have.
Of course people are going to make fun of you when you do that. He thinks he's owed deference because he is a movie star. But when you act like a tabloid star, don't be surprised when you get treated like one. Tabloid starts act messy so people will talk about them and the cycle continues. Movie stars don't need that bullshit.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

"unprofessional"? well of course; appearing on TV has its protocols
I'm just really anti- the notion that breaking those protocols for a just reason in a moment of passion should equate to moral depravity or some shit
somebody was smacked on the cheek, someone who wasn't even hurt by it; it wasn't Joker opening fire on a talk show

Now THAT would be good TV. I would even spring for pay-per-view if I thought there was a chance to see Meghan McCain bite it.

telling jokes against disabled and chronically ill Black women and shaming them in front of a largely white crowd is just as bad, but we excuse hateful comedy as "freedom of speech"; I'm calling this reaction from Will "audience banter" and I thought it was hilarious; I also thought Chris Rock is in a much, much better social position to take what was dished out to him
it's worth noting here that I'm not an "anti-violence" person in the sense that a lot of people would wish I was; I don't think all violence is created equal, and if this wasn't staged (I don't think it was, but I'm allowing for the possibility) then I'm calling it resistance and consequence
